We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty, cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We made a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know, I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time

This song sounds vaguely familiar. Perhaps I've heard it before.

Yeah, I grinned a mile wide when William shared about Dweezil's hand in this fantastic re-mix... Clear, with solid punch! I can only imagine the damage my buddy Mike and I could have done to all the speakers we blasted this epic anthem through back in the day! And one of the vinyl discs we used to wear the grooves out on was indeed their Live in Japan album -- and I'd like to shout out to feisty little Mariko from Naha, who turned me onto it when we worked together at Emi's! She got to see their shows LIVE as a teenager before emigrating to the US; used to make me so jealous! She'd score B-151 for me and I'd trade nice nuggets of hash for it, and she'd tell me stories; made me dream of Japan, a wild planet I'd end up exploring for 20 years...
Interesting version. Dweezil is the son of Frank Zappa who is referenced in the song. This line up of Deep Purple was great, especially live. Smoke on the water on the live in Japan album has so much more power than the studio version imho.

When I was a young lad, all I heard was the guitar...how did I ever miss the keyboard.!? It elevates this song from great to excellent.
It's a great song, but I really can't listen to it anymore... Played so often on some radio stations and parties

Man, I wore this album out back in the day! I was fortunate to see them and Yes at SPAC in Saratoga NY last summer. Amazing concert but I'm glad I packed earplugs. ![music](https://img.radioparadise.com/emoji/icon_music.gif)

Is it just me, or is the sound quality rather bad?
Cool thing about the songs that were overplayed during a period of time is, when you hear them again - it's either "hell, yeah!" or "meh, I can see why stations stopped playing this in past 10 years".
This one is HELL YEAH!
Some songs are simply great.
