A lazy rain am I
The skies refuse to cry
Cremation takes its piece of your supply
The night is dressed like noon
A sailor spoke too soon
And China's on the dark side of the moon

(Hit me now)

Platypus are a few
The secret life of roo
A personality I never knew
(Get it on)
My Greta weighs a ton
The archers on the run
And no one stands alone behind the sun

It's been a long time since I made a new friend
Waiting on another black summer to end
It's been a long time and you never know when
Waiting on another black summer to end

Crack the flaming whip
A-sailing on a censorship
Riding on a headless horse to make the trip

Been a long time since I made a new friend
Waiting on another black summer to end
It's been a long time and you never know when
Waiting on another black summer to end

I been waiting
I been waiting
Waiting on another black summer to end
I been waiting
I been waiting
Waiting on another black summer to end
I been waiting
I been waiting
Waiting on another black summer to end

This is not good.
Is this making reference to the 2019/2020 'Black Summer' fires here in Australia?

the openng bars made me think i was in for another (damn) Decemberists "tune". thankfully not.

I 100% think that Kiedis is the weak link in this band. They've always put out some interesting, even intricate music, and then he opens his mouth and it goes from WOW to oh.
Hmm, a bit lame for RHCP

Agreed

But pretty decent over all = IMHO

Me too!!!! As I heard the first bars, I thought "Is this a Jethro Tull I've never heard before?"... Glad to know I wasn't the only one to be tricked into that idea...

Boring music.

Yeah I noticed the bit of that flat nasal quality going on.  Interestingly one of my friends who has done a lot of singing-songwriting is in his mid-50s and sounds exactly like this now, having lost his warm singing voice.  I'm now starting to wonder what's going on.  Maybe a change in hearing with age causes us to hear ourselves differently?  Or maybe older singers just get rusty and don't try as hard?
I just can't get with this.

Granted there's a lot of fan noise down here, but at first I thought I heard Ian Anderson and was expecting to hear a flute.
Then I heard the break ...

Apparently, Kiedis put on that quasi-"Gaelic" accent as a tribute to Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon, for some reason.

This is actually a pretty good song. For a band that is derided almost as much as U2, RHCP has spun out a few really good songs. This is one of them.

It seems to me that too many people judge bands by the weakest part of their oeuvre. I personally don't care if later material doesn't stand up - I'll still enjoy Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication just as much as I did in the '90sDitto for REM, Pearl Jam, etc.
Once you see the RHCP live you get it.
I certainly wouldn't have clocked it as RHCP - I hear many older influences including celtic folk, and I like it!

fwiw John F rejoined the band in late 2019 and was with them for the writing/recording (and soon touring) of this new album.

very distinctively RHCP though perhaps less arrogant than previous material.  Not bad.
