This kind of music is played live by fantastic groups of musicians on the canary islands, that are actually part of Europe. This sound is so typically to the islands because lots of people went to Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia or Mexiko to work and escape the poor but beautiful life there. Many returned and brought this kind of music back.

And when the lyrics say "Oye que te llevaré a una isla bonita" (Hey, I'll take you
to a beautiful island) it is very likely they think about the island LA PALMA, which is called "La isla bonita" and very famous because of its beauty.

And, hey: I do live there, too (for some months each year) – and when RP runs songs like these, I get a warm feeling of home. So: Thank you Bill!

I'm cuban, and these guys really nailed it. Even better that a lot of cuban bands actually.

It's more Irish than Scottish, on the Celtica side. They're typical of modern Scottish music, in that they're a fusion of multiple cultural influences. ACSS is another example.

This album featured Cuban artistes. I've seen the band many times, in Nottingham strangely enough, and they give a grand gig. ¡Viva la cumbia!
always enjoy this song!
So much fun!
This is great, made me smile.

You might have heard the rhythm (chacha) before. Perhaps on dance class, or on vacation in Cuba? Or maybe Santana's 'Oye como va' or Mink Deville's Demasiado Corazon.

woww niceeee....that  good surprise ¡¡¡¡

The title translates to "Evening sun" - kind of apropos for music of such mixed heritage!

When I realized that this wasn't more Santana, this caught my ear.  An easy 7, but, if I listen more, my rating could easily go higher.

It shouldn't work, but it does - these guys are stars throughout Scotland, believe me, and even beyond. I've seen them twice at Nottingham in a small venue and they're an absolute hoot, great fun.  The band is a genuine mix of Irish, Scottish, and Latin American musicians, and technically the dog's bollox. This is just so typical of modern Scottish music, which is characterised by cultural and stylistic fusion (see also Peatbog Faeries, Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Afro-Celt Sound System, and many others).

"Ranchero music"? ROTFL!

An easy 9 from the Albaphile Nottingham jury.

The RP mix is so subtle and smooth, so lovely. All the — ANY — Latin music you play is just jarring and disruptive. IMHO. Not a fan of STACCATO rhythm. Yuk.

Saw this bunch in Nottingham  3 years back and they were feckin' brilliant - a big mixed band with a cheeky and chatty Columbian guy in the lead, chatting up all the girls from the stage. Seriously danceable, and I say that as someone with two left feet. They're back here next week and I really can't wait.

Their 15th anniversary this year - it's amazing to think that they've been around so long but only in recent years have they achieved the exposure and fame they deserve. These guys and gals are seriously big in Scotland.

Ah, Salsa: the vertical expression of a horizontal desire ;)

Edit: saw them in Nottingham  last week at a small venue on the university campus and they were as good as 3 years ago, though they had a new lead singer from Cuba (as was the main percussionist). Highly recommended as a live show.

We saw them playing in Amsterdam about 10 years ago, and were just swept away. They are so much fun!

I was fortunate to see in the new year with Salsa Celtica performing for us! They were playing at Edinburghs Hogmanay party.

Our esteemed Bill just mentioned on the air the fiddle in the band is an indicative the band is from Celtic lands.

A Cuban style known as 'Charanga' has been using a fiddle since at least the 1910's. In the 70's charangas were played by many Salsa bands, including—of course—Fania All Stars, and Charanga 76. Additional Info in the Wikipedia entry:

I suggest a good psychiatrist to work on the repressed rage and to help you find balance in the mean-time, perhaps an anti-anxiety like Lexapro, etc. Oh, yes, and a daily dose of Radio Paradise, the best anti-anxiety on the planet. {#Meditate}

I'm married to a Scotsman and he'd be very proud....     I can hear the Celtic twists throughout but I never would have expected this was a Scottish group.   They're all just a little off center which is why they're such an amazing group of people!!!!      Donald—-where's your troozers?

The band sounds pretty tight ... I am wondering about other tracks which show a true medley of the styles (i.e., a true 'Salsa Celtica'). This specific number is a straight ahead 'son cubano', IMHO. I guess I'll check out the other tracks ... nice to hear some "Salsa" here :-) Maybe it would be too much to ask for 'Salsa Brava', from the original creators of Salsa ... how does one suggest tracks here? {#Whisper}
