Sweet Jesus, I'm on fire
She has the sweetest, darkest side
And when it comes into her eyes
I know iron and steel couldn't hold me

Good God, I'm easy bruised
But so often a moth to her flame
And the things that she's asked me to do
Would see a senior saint forgetting his name

I have an audience with the Pope
And I'm saving the world at eight
But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me
Everybody's going to have to wait, ah, ah

Where could she be?
Was that a minute or an hour?
Where could she be?
She turns the hours into days
Kill the phone, cover the cage
And wait for the doorbell to ring

Where could she be?
No, she won't come running
Where could she be?
The world is turning at her pace
Gonna kill the phone, cover the cage
And wait for the doorbell to ring

I have an audience with the pope
and I'm saving the world at eight
but if she says she needs me
she says she needs me everybody is going to have to wait

I have an audience with the Pope
And I'm saving the world at eight
But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me
Everybody's going to have to wait

I have an audience with the Pope
And I'm saving the world at eight
But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me
Everybody's going to have to wait, ah, ah

I have an audience with the Pope
And I'm saving the world at eight
But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me
Everybody's going to have to wait
Everybody's going to have to wait, ah, ah

Always fascinating to see the haters chime in on music I find sublime. How anyone could dislike the eroticism of the lyrics and pacing, the wonky dissonance of the guitar and piano interlude, and the unabashed humour is beyond me. It's the crazy eclecticism of RP that first attracted me and not only keeps me hooked but paying for the pleasure and privilege. Don't like it? Why are you here? Go play somwhere else. Or at least, as my mother admonished, if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.

It has a "spy movie" soundtrack quality to it.  I can't quite explain why!

You just might be misinterpreting the meaning and significance of "the pope".

Elbow. They never quite get going, then it's the end of the song.

Lippy Kids is my ringtone. I also was introduced to Elbow by RP, thank you Bill!. Elbow is also my Pandora station of choice which has introduced me to even more good music.

Not a fan of the Pope {#Sorry}

But Elbow is alright! {#Bounce}
The mix this afternoon is amazing. Its cold here, we're inside cooking, the cats are sleeping and the house is filled with an incredible selection of tunes. Thank you!

I think this is a really great song. Good music.
But this guys voice just ruins it for me.

I think this is the worst track off of the album.

Grandmas in Asheville tend to be just a little cooler than most.

I recently bought this disc...I'm enjoying it.  So far I like the last track 'friends of ours' best.
I am very sensitive to his voice, I was doing something else and had to come to the computer to see who was singing. First time I hear this one song by Elbow, it's really nice. As for the lyrics, to associate the girl, the pope and saving the world in one song I must confess, is quite strange but somehow it works for my non native english speaker ears.

I'm sure they will. Can't wait for the next one.

Thank you Bill for increasing your play of Elbow. Can never get enough of these guys :)

I see a lot of people saying that Elbow sound like Peter Gabriel, but the only song that really sounds like Peter to me is One Day Like This.
This band has risen to the top three of my list presently....
this song both drags and repeats itself endlessly.  and its played way too often.
good stuff indeed!!

  ...well, tm:

On Saturday 17th January 2009 at the world famous Abbey Road studios in London, Elbow performed the entirety of their Mercury Music Prize winning album The Seldom Seen Kid with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Chantage, the winners of Radio 3's Choir Of The Year competition. The unique performance of the album was seen by a select audience and was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on the evening of Saturday 31st January. The show saw the band play new and exclusive versions of the songs from the album in order. They were joined (as on the album) by Richard Hawley for The Fix.

This import features the standard 11-track album along with a DVD of the aformentioned performance, featuring all 11 album tracks.

This gets pretty tedious after a while. Keep waiting for something that never comes. Voice is more lazy than intimate.

The man has the right idea! He is obviously head over heals, and it's a very sexy thing to say about the woman he loves.
Hmmm...drags a bit...don't hate it though.
I think this has been played every day for the past week or so.  I don't like it, but even allowing that others think it is good, what justifies playing it that often?
So glad that's over - hopefully the Popey will keep them waiting for a while :-)
Doesn't this remind you of Queens of the Stone Age?
You love this song, don't you Bill?
This particular track is a little ponderous for me right now, (9:17AM - at work) but I like it.  I like most of what I've heard from these guys; they seem to be influenced by many of my favorite artists.

I'd like to pose that question again.

I have two others, Cast of Thousands and Leaders of the Free World. Both are excellent, although this one's probably my favorite by a whisker. But you can't go wrong with either of those (there may be one or two that came out before them, but I haven't picked them up yet)

This song is less acceptable the more I hear it, makes me wish I had a next-track button for RP. Seems plodding and affected. Maybe I'm just not crazy about this whole set and am taking my feelings out on this tune. Still...
Once again, RP has introduced me to some great music... you should all check out this CD..
The number of "regular joes" I've met recently raving about this album suggests to me Elbow is about to hit stardom.  Good for them; but be prepared for the elite to suddenly start having second thoughts ;)

Asleep in the Back is a CD I listened to so many times after I first got it that my friends got sick of me.

Or was it the other way around?

Hmmmm.
...trying not to fall asleep.  Kind of a dull song.  Not bad, just dull.

I bought this album after hearing it on RP, have to say, it's one of my better cd purchases in quite a while.

Apart from having a great voice mr. Guy Garvey is a talented poet. Luckily the lyrics (poems?) are reprinted interily in the very nice CD cover. Of course, the rest of the band just makes outstanding music. A great discovery on RP for me.
