Father Lucifer you never looked so sane
You always did prefer the drizzle to the rain
Tell me that you're still in love with that milkmaid
How's the Lizzies? How's your Jesus Christ been hanging?

Nothing's gonna stop me from floating
Nothing's gonna stop me from floating

He says he reckons I'm a watercolour stain
He says I run and then I run from him and then I run
He didn't see me watching from the aeroplane
He wiped a tear and then he threw away our apple seed

Nothing's gonna stop me from floating
Nothing's gonna stop me from floating
Can't go away

Every day is my wedding day
Though baby's still in his comatose state
I'll dye my own Easter eggs
Don't go yet just don't go
And Beenie lost the sunset but that's okay
Does Joe bring flowers to Marilyn's grave?
And girls that eat pizza
And never gain weight
And never gain weight
And never gain weight

Father Lucifer you never looked so sane
You always did prefer the drizzle to the rain
Tell me that you're still in love with that milkmaid
How's the Lizzies? How's your Jesus Christ been hanging?

Tori Amos. Everything she does is pure genius. Vocal, piano listen to that piano.
Man, she's so annoying...
Great music!!
There was a review of a Kate Bush album that concluded with the comment that the family cat had an unfair amount of abuse directed at it when it had the temerity to request attention after the reviewer had had to listen to the complete album...  The same would apply here.
I bought this album in Brussels while I was busking my way across Europe with a friend when I was 16.  We would sing with our guitar cases open all afternoon and get enough money for dinner.  Back then two American kids singing Simon and Garfunkel tunes poorly was considered cute (I like to imagine).  Not sure how that would go over today.  Anyways, singing all day, listening to this song at night on my disk-man... the memories are priceless.

One Tori Amos's singing is fine, but a bunch of overdubbed Tori Amos's at different pitches is a real assault on the ears.
Absolutely awful like most of Tori's stuff.
I died during this song. It was worth it.

I wish I had been witty enough to say that....
What the hell? I rather like this and see that all the more sophisticated listeners find it revolting. I will choose not to overanalyze the song.
Good but she just feels like a Kate wanna be to me.
Respect for Tori...

In my opinion, few women have blazed trails as musically rich and deep. I love her work.

I appreciate the artistry. But like Norah Jones, Chris Isaak, Arcade What's On Fire, Radiohead, Kate Bush and multiple others, I remain unmoved and often annoyed. Next.
Appalling.

Love this song!  Amazing production and lovely voice.  It will always remind me of driving on a mid-western highway through the rain.

Oh, the total opposite here. The (very brilliant) album this song is from was on my earphones in heavy rotation while flying over the atlantic ocean to her homeland. I was so looking forward spending a year and a bit there.

I think she resides in the UK for over a decade now? Maybe you want to attack the other embassy now?

Silly act. Nonetheless.
This song makes want to attack the embassy of whichever country Tori Amos is from.
I feel a little bit better knowing there's artists like Tori Amos in the world pissing off the armchair music critics. I think she probably enjoys knowing that too.

I had the same violent reaction every Christian does to the title "Father Lucifer," moreso because I'm probably the biggest Tori fanatic in the entire evangelical congregation. It's obvious, if you take the time to listen, that Tori is using a wildly antagonistic metaphor to say not that she loves Satan but that God, as represented by the psychotic televangelists and their throng, is not looking so cogent these days. The song is a question, not a statement. To the Christians in the audience, I say, try listening at least as often as you speak — see if that opens your mind at all. Just a thought. (shrug)

I like Tori and think she is an exceptional artist and musician, but she misfired here. Some of the backing vocal is off key and the horns are horrible in the mix. Whether intentional or not, it's ugly musically; I do give her props for trying for an unusual sound. As to the lyrics and such, I can't even get that far past the musical cacophony in this tune.
What a love/hate reaction this woman inspires! Personally, I LOVE her. beautiful... 10! xoxo
At least this song delivers 3 or 4 pathetic sob-sighs to give warning of what's to come, allowing me to change stations. It would be good if she provided a similar Early Warning System on all of her songs (in case the piano doesn't provide enough of a clue).
The last run of this song came immediately before Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk.  Talk about a clash.  Horrible screeching vs solid jazz piano.  It's almost an insult to Brubeck.
Ugh.  No more Tori, please.  Don't get me wrong — I really liked "Little Earthquakes."  But mostly her vocal style drives me insane.  Nails on a chalkboard.
One of the best songs on this album, in my opinion.

Say what you will about tori, I just read through the posts here and any music that can trigger such passionate discussion must be good for something. I don't personally dig her, but I can't help but respect her honesty and talent. On a side note, Marley, this "philosophy" that preaches hate~are you referring to Christianity? B/c if you are, you're wrong. That's a mighty big generalization. FUNDAMENTALISTS may practice that, but honest Christians do not. I was born and raised in the south, and I unlike those who have never lived there, know that to be fact. Any religion has facets of it that are shameful, but it's no reason to discount everyone that follows it.
What's up with all the wack jobs on this thread? Sheesh... lighten up people. I'm an Agnostic Republican... I love Tori... I love Rage Against The Machine... Ani DiFranco... Pearl Jam... John Lennon... Neil Young... Beastie Boys... and I love RP. If I listened to only artists that agreed with my views... I'd shoot myself. I don't give a shit that Bill disagrees with my politics, he's got a 1st ammendment right and a vehical for his speech. I DO care that he plays great music. It's all just a bunch of music so shut up and listen. :-# If you don't want to listen... don't. Jesus, people are sensitive

Nope. Avowed atheist Josef Stalin: at least 30 million dead to his credit. Avowed atheist Vladmir Lenin: at least 500,000 to his credit. The explicitly secular French Revolution gave us the guillotine, the Jacobins and Robespierre. Avowed atheist Pol Pot accounts for 1 million dead Cambodians and Vietnamese. Raging pagan (he loved those Wagnerian operas for a reason) Adolf Hitler accounts for about 10 million dead.

I don't know if anyone (save maybe Dylan) gets so much negative feedback on this station as Tori. People can't seem to separate her from her music. I've heard people dismiss Springsteen's political views in lieu of his music, and religion is as political as it gets. She's not trying to convert anybody, man, and you can't write off everything that she does as crap. If you don't like her, don't listen to her, but just take it easy, man. Would you just take it easy, man. and no, I'm not a satanist or a physicsgenius, I'm just an eclectic music fan.

Maybe it's because having years of hate, judgementalism, "morals" and intolerance shoved down your throat for so many years does that to you. I worked in a place where there were a lot of hard-core Christians and I was subjected to hear their hate talk about gays, a women's right to choose and about anyone who was different to them or who chose a different lifestyle. I find that kind of lack of understanding and judementalism intolerable and I quit my job so I wouldn't have to be around people like that anymore. I mean seriously, why do you guys think that only you are right?? trekhead wrote:
