I see comments about this tune 14 years ago and then 13 years ago and then again 5 years ago. I guess it's time to comment again on what a blasé tune this is.

The lyrics are straight from Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. Donovan must have had writer's block when he came up with this one. I love Donovan and the Tao Te Ching, but not this song.

All your guesses are wrong!! As a student of eastern philosophy I can tell you the lyrics to this song are an almost complete transliteration from the Tao Te Ching, the formost book of Taoist philosophy originally from China. That the song is kinda weak isn't the fault of Taoism. Donovan really fell off the boat this time.
