Come on in through my screen door
Tell me all of your cares
I'm here to lend my ears
Where have you been lately, haven't seen you much around here
You've been hiding out in the shade
Your skin is all gone to grey
Did you eat today when are you coming home to stay?
CHORUS
Don't you know I love you when you're down and dirty
Don't you know I love you when you're clean
If you could see what I see, you'd see a boy who thinks that sad is all he is
You've been looking around without your vision
Hearing things without listening suffering but feeling no real kind of pain
And you know I'd like to help but if I let you ride for free
You'd only drag me down into the cheap, cheap seats
CHORUS
Don't you know I love you when you're down and dirty
Don't you know I love you when you're clean
You've got this thing against living with the best
but you sure like to visit it don't you?
When the streets get too cold, when you're feeling weary and old
When your chances for survival are looking oh so slim
When all of a sudden you want to live to be 80, maybe 90, maybe 110
CHORUS
Don't you know I love you when you're down and dirty
Don't you know I love you when you're clean
I know that everything ain't always what it seems to be
Tell me all of your cares
I'm here to lend my ears
Where have you been lately, haven't seen you much around here

I was going to write that I thought this was Fiona Apple or Joan Osborne, and than I discovered that I definitely wasn't the only one with such a thought. And to think that she has been making music since at least 2000, hadn't heard of her (or didn't think I had), maybe I heard her before when I thought she was Fiona, Joan or another "white trashy singer" like Stevie Nicks. (Ha...that was a pretty funny comment thewiseking.)
PS, I gotta say I don't like Joan or Fiona much, but I definitely liked this song and was going to take back all the bad press I had given them before.

Writing "badazz" is always serious.

Maybe my hearing is exceptionally refined (not likely) or I have heard and can recognize a vast number of contemporary female bluesy singers (also not so likely; who has the time?), but she really does not sound at all like those who are cited in the comments. As is often the case, I have never heard this musician anywhere but here: she sounds like herself and is recognizable for this. Every musician's music reflects influences to some degree and I appreciate that such tendencies are detectable in many if not all music we hear in this oasis. However, the "sounds like..." comments eventually become wearying. I am guilty of thinking this and occasionally posting, but try to recognize that each person who gets played here has developed a distinct style and expresses qualities that approach unique. We really ought to try and appreciate this. Oh, I like this piece.

Most people are saying Joan Osborne but for me this smacks more than a little of Sheryl Crow and I for one will not be complaining about that.
Put me in the sounds a bit like Bonnie Raitt camp. Solid pipes and tune.
Sexy song, love a woman who knows what she wants!
sounds just like joan osborn and bonnie raitt. booooring!

Big fan. Her live record, North American Ghost Music, is especially great.
Would LOVE to get down & dirty with her!
Ordinary. Not bad...not great. Like KT better for this kind of style.
Thank you for playing women artists on RP — what a concept. Just another way in which you ROCK!!!!
This song, the singer and musicianship were excellent. The detractors are perhaps threatened by subject of the song.

Nice . . . but sounds a little too slick and even for the level of vocal emoting (I'm making words up, I know). Maybe better on another listen.

Hey- for those of you that liked it.. go get the album. Definitely worth it. She's got a great voice and the production/musicians put together for it are well worth it.
WOW
she sings as hot as she looks! Yum!!
I do love the sentiment
She's not Joan, but we need more Joan, so I'll give this woman an 8.
Why is this only 6.6?
More than just catchy.
mmmmm dirty girl!
everybody sounds like Joan Osborne to me too. I think it a very generic "blues" voice

tend to agree: too much country; bad metronomic drums, too much like pop krap. sounds too much like everything else terrible out there. Someone down there wrote that it sounded generic; That's exactly right! Can't imagine how this artist got signed. 4 and falling.

Just saw her last week, opening for the BoDeans. Another New Orleans musical resident who's now relocating. This was her first performance since Katrina, and she said she couldn't really talk about it as she couldn't cry and sing at the same time.
She sang a couple of new tunes, including a brand new one called "Gulf Of Mexico" and closed with a chilling acapella take on Sam Cooke's classic "A Change Is Gonna Come". A very powerful live performer, and yes, she IS very easy on the eye as well.
