Well, blow me, my family has been telling me fibs. There is no way my great-grandfather could have been on a Shackelton ship as their first sibling was born in 1890 and my great grandfather was born in 1850, which means he probably arrived in NZ in 1880 plus or minus 5 or ten years...  Now, who told me that story about Shackelton??  Is it too early to wake the dead? I want answers!!
The German woman bit though is true. I've traced her line back to a small village in North Germany.
