Okay, I'll tell you -yes, we have differing opinions on nearly everything.

These are not really separate issues as a pledge is to the nations ideals and your fellow countrymen in pursuit of those ideals. It's not just the words and the banner we wave above them. That we let politicians alter those words to suit their agenda for the day belittles the commitment to the original goals and ideals that we are supposed to be supporting.

I thought you, as a well rooted descendant of this nation would get that.

How about we just acknowledge that the founders were actually Diests and really did intend to create a government separate and independent of the church?

History is a mixed bag. We get good and bad all the time, and often it's difficult to tell which is which until we get some soak time on the decisions. It's important to remember where we made the changes along the way in case we find that they aren't working so well.  I'd say that evangelical devotion has been a net negative for the last several decades and would like to go back to the place where our government didn't support or impede any religion that was in compliance with our laws. But I see that as making America Stronger, not weaker. So we obviously have differing opinions here.

Oh, and the politically inconvenient and uncomfortable ...

USS Cole bombed while refueling in Yemen 15 years ago today by Al Qaeda.

I'm really not a football fan, but this reminded me of something from way back in my misspent youth.   It was when Woody Hayes was coaching at Ohio State and by his own admission later in life taking football far too seriously.  IU on the other hand traditionally  looked at football as something that just got in the way of basketball and was very rarely anywhere near the top of the Big Ten.  At the time Lee Corso was coaching here and I always thought he was the perfect fit for such a program.  His after game TV shows were a riot.  One year when the Buckeyes were in town for the formality of recording their win by some miracle IU managed to score first.  Corso immediately called a timeout so he could assemble the entire team in front of the scoreboard and take a picture.   Woody was absolutely livid.   I thought he might stroke out right on the spot.  It was probably the most entertaining thing I've ever seen in a football stadium.  The second string never came in that day.  They ran the score up absurdly high, but not nearly that.  I got to wonder what instigated it here.

That one's probably still going strong. My understanding is all the gears and moving parts in it were metal. By the mid-80s, other brands had come out with their plastic-geared junk. The price was a lot lower, sure, but my friend was a repair guy who got a lot of work out of those. He took a Sony apart to see why they didn't break down.

Strange how stuff like that happens - I guess the world looked pretty small to Neil and Buzz that day too.  That day I was out playing with my friends and we went into a neighborhood deli to get a soda or something.  The owner had a little TV which was showing the preliminary "circling" from the window of the module.  We ran home to watch it - it was on all 7 channels.
