This is not the time to play hero. There is no way to predict what an individuals prognosis will be.  Isolation and time is the surest and safest of the available course of actions.

We are still rapidly learning.  It seems that men are twice as likely to get ill as women.  It also seems that those with Type O blood fair better than others.  It is simply amazing what the power of data collection and organization is revealing.  Most likely this will seem like a bad dream we all had in a few months from now.  We just have to be patient and believe that this to will be solved and resolved, until the next one comes along.

But ... right now the most important thing is the conservation of protective gear and keeping spaces and equipment available for those who will need it should they contract the virus.  Social distancing may be boring and unglamorous but it is the best thing that we all can do to help each other get past this as quickly as possible.

testing is a bit nuts here in Germany.

You ring your doctor if you have symptoms,
If and only if you have had contact with a confirmed case do you get a code and can then go to a drive-in station and get tested.

My son came back from a skiing trip in Tyrol three weeks ago. Probably clean, but my wife got a heavy cold/flu with fever ten days ago.. the symptoms matched. sore throat, dry cough, extreme runny nose, fever.
And we had four cases in the office (also a skiing trip in Tyrol one week later) .. we have been in isolation for the last two weeks. Incubation time is just about up. so we are probably clean, but damn, it would be good to know if she had it or not.  

Personally, I would rather get the damn thing now and build up some resistance to it. It would make a lot of sense if most able-bodied non-risk individuals in society did. You could actually manage this. Get infected willingly, go into quarantine and come out with at least some natural resistance to the next wave that is bound to come. It's the ones with prior conditions who need protecting. Not us. And that way we could build up some kind of herd immunity that everyone is on about without risking a non-controlled explosion in the number of cases..   or am i missing something?

I'm in my system so deep that all of that is already on file.  Last I heard my med records just at CCF is way over 3000 pages and growing.  That was several years ago.

I gather that few people think like this. My dad's PCP has commented that getting this kind of info before even a regular visit can take lots of time and effort.

When my dad was dealing with two under-diagnosed but serious issues, I stayed with my parents for months to help out. I entered in all of his drug prescriptions into his iPhone and pushed the list to the phones of everyone else in our family. When my dad went in for a scheduled checkup, the PCP's physician assistant was amazed and overjoyed to see that up to date list of prescriptions.

A little insight from my recent experience with CV 19, the test, the incarceration and the wait for the results.

As usual, I went through the Cleveland Clinic system with my usual doctors and hospital (the one I did my primary chemo 10 years ago and is also a level 2 trauma facility), hardly a fly by night operation.  This was last weekend when the tests first became widely available to the public in the USA.

The Clinic (CCF) like many other health care providers has a CV19 hotline.  Call it for instructions on how to present yourself should you feel the need to get checked for the virus.  Initially, you needed to have a doctor's order to get checked at the ED just to get into triage.  That was a week ago.  When I was tested and yes the swab is nasty and will hurt for a couple of days, they initially said they would have the results in 8 hours.  8 became 24 and 24 became 48 and I finally found out after 60 hours.

Staff and systems in place are stressed out and they are not running as intended and will degenerate as staff runs out of supplies or falls ill and becomes depleted.  Doesn't matter how good or experienced they are.  Things are just what they are now.  Patience will go a long way for everyone.  There is nothing wrong with a gentle reminder if an hour or so has passed that a request or need has not been met.  Asking every 15 minutes is not OK.

The most important things that you can do as a potential patient is first round up all of your medications and make a detailed printed list as well.  Put this in your "go bag" along with your cell phone and charger and several changes of underwear as well as some protein bars or other nourishment that will help you get through long waits.  Should you be admitted, it is very unlikely that anyone will be able to bring you something that you forgot and may need later. 

If you are going in, call your primary provider and let them know that you are and where you are going before you leave.  The extra time it takes to do this is insignificant, yet helps keep everyone properly informed so things go as smoothly as possible.

Leave all jewelry and wallet and any other valuables at home.  You will not need them.  Just take ID and your meds.

Be aware that the hospital's formulary may not have the same things that you are prescribed, especially any breathing aids such as Advair or Symbicort or any other specialty needs that you may have.  They will try and substitute what they have, but it may not be right for you.  I had the problem with my Symbicort.  They wanted to give me Brio instead.  Nope.  You may have to argue that you will only take what your doctor prescribed and will have to stick to your guns to get them to listen.  Make them listen.  Insist.  Do not let them take your meds away from you.  They must adjust to your needs, not theirs when it comes to your personal long term medication.  They will if you calmly stick to your guns.

If you are admitted, get to know your nurses and who is on what shift and for how long and what and how often vitals are taken, etc.  Do everything you can to help them get through their shift and require as few visits to your room as possible.  They must gown up just to walk in and answer a question, shed upon leaving.  This puts stress on theses supplies not to mention the hassle of the process.  They will appreciate your knowledge and concern for their well being.  Always thank them for whatever they do.  It goes a long way.

The rest will just have to take care of itself as time passes.  Being organized before going in will help you more than you can imagine.  

Hopefully you do not have to go through any of this, but if you do, I hope this helps.
