" LCG Jukebox" allows listening to Internet streaming stations.
The player supports Shoutcast and Icecast protocols over http.

Does 'paradise' use these protocols?

Thanks

Paradise uses a protocol called "Bliss" which is up to v4 now.

Bliss V4 is a stateful protocol that has the ability to break music into constituent notes which, when delivered to Paradise users, induces a state of "Nirvanna." Especially intense packets can result in "Ecstasy" which must be buffered before it can be consumed by the receiving process. Wide-bandwidth pipes are most recommended for establishing "Ecstasy".

Per the topic's title, yes, Radio Paradise does use the HTTP Internet protocol.

Per the "Shoutcast and Icecast protocols" that you mentioned, this isn't an Internet protocol.  But yes, Radio Paradise does use the ICY application layer protocol.

Lonely Cat Games is pretty sparse with the details about their application.  It appears that LCG Jukebox relies on the device's operating system to supply the audio decoders.

  • Neither Radio Paradise nor the SE P910 support the Ogg format (or the Vorbis wrapper), so that's moot.
  • Radio Paradise does support the AAC and AAC+ formats, but (IIRC) only uses the "audio/aac" identifier.  This can confuse some devices, which only understand the .mp4, .m4a and/or other .m4? suffixes and/or the "audio/3gpp" identifier and/or the .3gp extension used only for mobile phones.
  • Both Radio Paradise and the SE P910 supports MPEG1, layer 3 (MP3).  You should concentrate your efforts there.

Since you have a best-case download rate of ~60 kbps on your phone (~80 max. with some equipment), you should start with 32 kbps streams.
  • If the phone and wireless system can maintain that data rate, you're set.
  • If that works well, you can try a 64 kbps stream.  Don't be surprised if it's flaky, though.
  • If you still have problems at 32 kbps, drop down to 16 kbps.
  • If 16 kbps still poses problems, maybe it's time for a new phone.

If you're interested in listening to music on the move, you should look into a CDMA phone/data service (Sprint, Verizon).  TDMA services are inferior to CDMA, mainly because they offer a fixed and limited number of time slots for data.  In practical terms, that means that one guy making a phone call nearby can take away your data bandwidth.  CDMA doesn't have this limitation.

I recommend Sprint.  Sprint has the most mature (CDMA) EV-DO network, and has at least some kind of data services (1xRTT) wherever thre's service.  (I've had rock-solid 64 kbps streams over 1xRTT, and 128 kbps over EV-DO Rev. 1).  Sprint is also the only mobile provider actively working on a nationwide WiMAX network in the US.  If you're going to sign a new service agreement, you might as well go for the one that holds the most promise.

Have you tried typing in the smartphone stream link?  rtsp://www2.radioparadise.com/radioparadise.sdp

Your browser should open a media player and "see there!" as they say in France.  Make sure you don't have to pay your provider for each byte of data over a certain limit.  It could be less expensive to go buy the CDs than pay them for the bandwidth.

Another option is to rip the Radio Paradise stream and dump the files onto a 1 or 2 GB memory stick.

Have fun and don't forget to send BillG a donation...

What kind of a phone do you have now?  If it has a media player then you should be able to use the existing smartphone stream.

The bandwidth required to listen to the shoutcast streams may exceed your provider's system unless you have a phone that has WiFi abilities.

Here's the iPhone topic link and there are some others you can search out.
