Ugh.  So sorry.  Make them comfortable and enjoy what time you can with them.  We are super grateful for the extra weeks we got with Cass when we got her on prednisone.

Damn. My sweet black and white pup, Middy ended up with lung cancer ... and I didn't even know she smoked.

I'll be flying back briefly in December, I'm signed up to bring a pup on the plane with me. It's super easy, and actually fun (I don't generally enjoy airport small talk, but put a dog in a bag with me and I might as well be Vince Offer). Lots of opportunities around. Your local Humane society probably has a sign up sheet for people who just want to take dogs out for a walk at lunch time.

Have you tried volunteering? I've been helping with a couple of orgs and even though we are canine encumbered it always leaves me feeling good. We are doing a sterilization clinic in a couple weeks - I'll tote dogs around, pick ticks, do lots of disgusting things, but when it's over, there will be 100+ fewer breeders around. These regular clinics have really made a difference in the stray population here and the idea is spreading to other communities.  Plus - there are always pups looking for a home, someone might catch your errant heart string.

I let them get away with tons of stuff because that's what I would want from my boss so it seems fair and logical. I've been trying to give grief and loss a break so I can read between the lines.

And hey, if I say strange things on the internet it's because I get off my chain occasionally and terrorize the neighborhood with everything from chortle to concerto and specially branded beckon and regale, so take it in the spirit. Having had at least one dog for most of my life and now having been without for these 8 years, I'm always only one dog away from adventure and the abstraction akin. They were all special but that last one had a certain relationship and timing and 19 years to surround my heart so that loss when grouped with both parents, aunts and uncles, close friends, clients, and mentors has taken a few days (years) to process. I'm getting itchy to say "quit that scratching" again...
