I've never been this accountable-less and within
I've never known focuslessness on any form
I've never had this lack of ache for dalliance
To let go and let God in ways I have never even imagined
I declare a moratorium on things relationship
I declare a respite from the toils of liaison
I do need a breather from the flavors of entanglement
I declare a full time-out from all things commitment
I've never let my grasp soften fingers like this
I've never been careless other-less like autonomy's twin
I declare a moratorium on things relationship
I declare a respite from the toils of liaison
I do need a breather from the flavors of entanglement
I declare a full time-out from all things commitment
Ahh, to breathe
Stop looking outside
Stop searching in corners of rooms
Not my business or timing, ahhh
I've never known freedom from intertwining
I start again, this time for keeps in my skin I'm residing
I declare a moratorium on things relationship
I declare a respite from the toils of liaison
I do need a breather from the flavors of entanglement

The connection between the two. Morissette is signed to the Maverick Record label. A company partly owned by Madonna (60%) and Warners (40%). Madonna once had full control of the (Maverick) label, but in recent years that control has ended following a heavy lawsuit between Madonna and Warner Bros. Under the new deal, Madonna will have no say in Maverick, but she will keep recording for Warner Bros., her home base since 1984.

I totally agree, however It took me only one listen to come to your well worded conclusion.
Gotta say, I half-way liked this track the first few times it was played, but the heavy rotation lately has inspired a passionate distaste that I'm quite incapable of communicating here. The Orbital-produced background ambiance is greatly appreciated, the off-rhyming, syncopated lyrics provided by Alanis are not. Please, Bill, reconsider; if she was shorted her 15 minutes, you've certainly compensated her sufficiently by now. O_O

The lyrics are oddly stilted, unnatural and awkward. I like the sound a lot but I can't take the sentiments seriously while she's calling for a 'full time out from all things commitment'. A what? 'Toils of liason?' Huh?
That'll teach me to look first before pointing the old player to RP
Many thanks to Orbital for producing this song.
Kind of Tori sounding. I like it!
I think techno was the right move for her.
She is one of the more pretentious popular song writers out there. Although for sheer audacity, few lines beat my favorite,"When I look back on the early 90's, your face comes back with a vengeance."

It's very different and surprising me that it is an Morisette-Song. Like the mid 90s released drum n' bass-Album from Gary Moore. Im not joking. :)

Can we have a moratorium on this song please? It is currently being played on a daily basis.

This song was played just 13 hours ago. Isn't there enough in the library to space out replays of this trash more. At least a full day would be nice.
I give up. This site is being taken over by whining haters. Time for me to listen and enjoy and leave you all in your misery.
Can we just eliminate this song from the playlist? Please?
is it possible to give this song a negative 4?
I do.
If you all hate it so much why spend the time posting about it when you could be off listening to something you like?
Just a thought...

nobody likes alanis . . . .
Something about the lyrics and the way she sings it makes it feel very unnatural and forced. Nice tune, horrid vocals/rythm by the singer. Yuck.
Wow. Bland pablum. Too bad.

ugh. this song drives me CRAZY!! it's not clever, witty word-play - it's a terrible song & horrible lyrics.
know why i can't stand her? it seems she'll grasp at any musical trend or persona in an effort to nail that next big hit.

Merci !
I like it, but I like electronica in general.
The thing about Alanis is that she makes great music for someone who isn't a musician. In this regard, the comparisons with someone like Britney are particularly apt, although the actual parallels are few and far between.
One way in which Alanis and Britney diverge, of course, is that Alanis has had interesting things to say over the course of her last several albums. Her art has been successful even though it has relied on a steady succession of producers to bring the musicality to her poetic license.
On this song, the threadbare production, lack of musicianship, and uninspired lyrics have conspired to pull back the curtain on The Great and Powerful Pop Princess. I guess I'm trying to say that it's no surprise that this song sucks, even as I'm wishing it were a better next effort from an artist who I respect a great deal.

Pop Alanis out!
I love it! Play it again
I dunno, guess I'm in the minority but I kinda liked it.
ugh. not again!
I declare a moratorium on any further Alanis Morissette recordings.
Maybe it's my faulty English (I speak French) or the biased and unfounded belief that short statements on RP say it all...

It's just too early to listen to people I don't care about talk about themselves.

I like the other tracks I've heard from this album much better. This one is just weak.
I'm no Alanis Morissette "hater", but this is just not good.
In the words of a certain potted petunia: "Oh no, not again."

The word moratorium just does not fit into a song. Or maybe just not into this song. Actually I don't think anything fits into this song.
I was crazy about her music around mid-nineties to the millennium. Really can't help it, but this song is not better than 'decent'.
She's a couple of years older and it seems like I've aged better, lol!

Well, like I said in my post, I never liked Alanis, starting from the moment she came out. I remember hearing "You oughta Know" the night it came out and thinking "This sounds very polished and produced to the point of almost being a parody." Thus before she was BIG, I disliked her. Her popularity is not part of my dislike, but it certainly didn't help my opinion. We were spoon fed her, like Brittney and all the rest. So yes, compared to Brittney. One dances, the other sings about her anger. Both are corporate pawns. She was marketed towards us and some of us swallowed it and others, myself included didn't, but again, that was more because I just didn't like how her music sounded. I just happen to like a little rawer sounding music. I know I'll be jumped on for this, but Alanis is like the alternative world's answer to Brittney. Hate to say it. But we were sold the product of Alanis and although I can see talent beyond that fact, on the whole, the package is not something I am buying. So my distaste spans from what I would call bad music, but the fact that her empire/marketing/popularity is similar to any teenage pop queen didn't help either. Just because she is kind of artsy and angry doesn't mean she's not a complete cooperate scheme to sell albums to the 'alternative' crowd. I don't mind that so much and will shell out my 20 bucks if the music is actually good.
*sigh* Let the attack begin.
Hey, Goldberry, no flak will come from this way! Reading your post, and rereading mine, I felt I said things that gave assumption you were not a good listener and I'm sorry about that. It was meant more as a recap of my own "Alanis experience" and my vision of some aspects of pop music. Maybe it's my faulty English (I speak French) or the biased and unfounded belief that short statements on RP say it all...
So you like your sound to be more Seattle than Vegas and it's OK. I'm still standing my ground about Alanis, and, as example, bought Jagged Little Pill only last year - found it good after hating -more correctly discarding- the songs on it for more than ten years! Of course we have divergent opinion on her work (and think she sounds less "commercial" album after album) but can respect the opposite argument when it is well stated. You think her music is created to pop out the cash on you. I think her music is pop creation and is worth my cash, but I have not bought her new album yet : I'm waiting for it to be on mid-prices sales rack!
Cheers.

Compared to who? Britney, Avril? I think the problem with Alanis is one of perception, probably coming from her huge popularity, a thing in North America normally associated with the "pure corporate created rock" mentioned in your post. But objectively, what is she doing wrong? The musicianship is competent, she writes, she sings (ok, some might bash there...), she does her own thing and it's felt, hell, I could be describing Sarah McLachlan here (using another "over stylized" Canadian to make my point - and even, Sarah doesn't write as much). Yet McLachlan is rarely accused of not being a true artist. I used to think Alanis' music was blatant commercial Pop too (because of the airplay mainly) until I paid closer attention (that is, gave it a spin home, and listened). Now I have most of her records and they are worthy. In fact, she's one of the few artists in my whole collection that grew on me through initial aversion.

Nice post. It's hard to get past that pop-veneer sometimes and really judge the musicianship beneath. Especially with all the stuff that's being thrown down our throats these days. I mean Scarlett Johanssen did a Tom Waits cover album. Where do you even start with something like that?
Somebody must have asked for a Moratorium on Alanis Morrissette and this was the answer.
Drum and Bass?
How...uh.....hip.

She can write some excellent lyrics but she is way over stylized in her music. She sounded dated even when she first came out. I really really really just don't get her appeal. I never feel more 'marketed' to than when I am listening to Alanis. Pure corporate created rock and roll.

interesting oppinions on alanis.
loved her as a kid, her lyrics although defo too feminine demonstrated a very witty approach to wordplay.
unsure as to this new guy sigsworth production. for some songs it works, for others it really doesn't.

Kinda hard to still be an angry young twentysomething in your mid thirties. And pretty sad if you are.
Glad to see/hear she's branching out and experimenting with new styles.

Interesting. I had to switch views just to see if this really was Alanis. I was doubting myself. A little too techno for my for Alanis. It just doesn't seem like "her".
Lovely! Really really great. More of same, please.
I thought I didn't like Miss Morissette. What was I thinking?!
Thanks RP for introducing me to the song!
Late 90s Madonna?
It's kinda appealing, moreso than the other two new Alanis songs I've heard here. I thought her parody last year of Black Eyed Peas' My Humps was terrific, and hoped this was a vision of things to come from Alanis, but, meh...

Being Canadian is not worth supporting by itself. There are a lot of Canadians who I don't care for musically.
That all being said, I do like this new stuff from her.
hmmm...pleasantly surprised. 7 to start. It may go up, if I find it growing on me.
This sounds like Sonique. Not bad, although not very original either.
I like it! I don't care what anyone says, I really like Alanis. It's been interesting to watch her lyrical perspective change as she grows up.
Quirky. The techno beat is something she hasn't done before, no?

For some reason I had given this a 7!! You are right however, the lyrics are just ridiculous. Otherwise well produced, good sound. 7 > 4
