I am in now way endorsing what toteki wrote, but this song was just played on the Main Mix.

Speak for yourself.
Some of the best tunes on RP have lyrics I don't even need to understand.

Depends on where you are from in England, we might not be able to understand you better!

Now I have an excuse to watch that again and see.  Great movie.  It's been too long.

MULTIPASS!
Uh oh, he's not singing in English so expect the white power classic rock fans to react badly.

Not repetitive at all.... Not repetitive at all... Not re-wait, wut?
How long is this song??  :)
It got worse as it went along but still very good!
My girlfriend and I thoroughly approve.

Completely beautiful...

This Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder album is amazing from start to finish....but I am a bit concerned about Patti playing frisbee with that vinyl.

Every time I hear this song I feel inner joy.  {#Angel}

Ali Farka Touré with Ry Cooder - Goye Kur, Live (1994):

"He's Ry Cooder looking very un-Ry-like (in a vest!) with Ali Farka Touré on stage at the 1994 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. This is an electric version of a track from Touré's 1993 album, The Source. Sadly it cuts out before the end. "

Ut-oh... of all the African style music I have heard here...well, I have got to say, "yea" ...I,  l,  l, .... maybe even 'love it"... I could be wrong?
My first song by them?
Its fine in the background but i was super disappointed once i saw who it was.  If this were a report card it would say C but could do better.

Can I apologise on behalf of the UK for the above poster? I fear he is a result of our 'care in the community' program (where we release mentally challenged patients into the the streets) and is obviously a sandwich short of a picnic.

wow.  I had sort of blocked out how annoying that was.  Now I realize it.  Sort of when you realize that you don't have the correct refresh rate on your monitor.  Right before you go into an epileptic seizure.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention.  I think (?)

this whole cd is terrific - i guess by your comment that the death of Ali Farka Toure has made this physical world better off without his music. Do you really think Rye Cooder is doing this just so he can feel global? He represents the best of globalism, He's a musician and searches for genius and collaborators all over the world. sheesh
Well said!
According to the liner notes, that's Ry Cooder playing a beautiful solo on a "toy guitar." Reason number infinity why Cooder is the man.

ahhh...palm music mixed with twelve string mastery. s000 gud 2 hear.
congrats to Captain_D0D00 winning the costa rica trip, and making my week with Bill intoning "Captain Dodoo!" i am howling!
Hard to tell what is wrong with so many listeners that they call this boring and move on, to what I cannot guess. Heard it too many times as the theme to The World from PRI? I recently got the CD out and played it loud. This particular song really is NOT boring. Repetition, if you have never noticed, is one of the features of music. How it is handled makes the difference, and this piece works. Maybe hearing it too many times in the background on a news program dulls the senses, but it deserves a real listen.

Given you're in Italy I would assume that your resentment is due to the increasing issues with illegal African immigration over there. So other than that and as one Redneck Georgia Cracker to another, don't insult educated white people.

The guitar riff reminds me of something from Johnny Clegg. Can't remember which song...

No, we just like it. It is not stimulating; in fact quite the opposite. It is just good to groove to, and relax.

There is a track on this album called Ai Du that is one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard. I don't believe it's in the RP playlist though.
This is the kind of music you have on in the background ... when wearing your white panama hat surveying your plantation, sipping some alcoholic drink with edible flowers used as a garnish. Sure beats sitting in my cube looking at a jar of pencils beside the monitor

Boring!

I agree to the fullest. This song makes the sun shine, even when I am buried in boring paperwork and the sky is gloomy and grey outside.
Yeah cool - but what about some more tracks from ALL those other Cooder albums. RP still has only 1 (solo) Cooder track on it's playlist. Shocking & perverse!

This remains one of my favorite songs of all time. I can listen to it at work and I've used it to put my kids to sleep for years.
That's some damn fine music there.
Ah, the African musical influence is always a welcomed one. It has a sort of audible shine to it.

Nice obituary in the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/07/AR2006030701813.html
With its stuttering guitar rhythms repeated over a single chord, half-spoken vocals and lively bursts of energy, his music reminded some of the Mississippi blues styles of John Lee Hooker and R.L. Burnside. In fact, when Mr. Toure first heard a Hooker recording in the 1960s, he thought he was hearing a form of Malian music. He once performed with Hooker in concert but always took pains to point out the differences between his music and that of his American counterparts. "I am the root," he said. "They are the branches." ... "In what you call the blues, I have heard people singing of their hardships," Mr. Toure said, "but to me this is a very small thing to tell people of; it has no great significance." His own songs tended to be about love, spiritual life and the land and rivers of Mali. He sang in nine African languages, always keeping the musical idioms of each style distinct. "My music is an education, a history, a legend, an autobiography -- it all tells a valuable story of something true," he said. "Different songs are inspired by different ethnic groups. . . . Often if you try and sing a song in a different language, it will not work."

You know, dismissing an entire genre is a dumb thing to begin with, because there's good and bad music to be found in all styles. But "World Music" isn't even a genre - it's just the recording industry's catch-all description for anything non-European. Dismissing all music from any country that doesn't speak English - or any music from outside the Western tradition - is just absurd. Let's just write off the bulk of the planet's musical output - nothing of interest there.
never heard of him, but what a bad ass...thinking paul simon graceland and loving it

This CD was my introduction to Ali Farka and Ry Cooder and it has become a constant presence in my CD player. It has some of the most interesting (not to mention sexy) music I've ever heard.

That's because so much world music is not written to fit the narrow format of American radio stations. They're free to explore. All the more reason to listen to it.
what is that slappy sound that appears on some of ry cooder's songs? it's so distinctive of his music.
Excellent album...highly recommended, folks, if 'eclectic' is indeed your bag....
Nice, but loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong.
Sir, world fusion is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all. Will someone wake me up when they're done zzzzz

i tend to agree with this comment, but this is actually a pleasant one.
Look, everyone! An actually forgiveable subtitle song. Must be Mr. Cooder's association... an 8.
MORE RY COODER! RY RADIO! ALL RY ALL THE TIME ! That would be fine with me! Few guitarists, or even musicologists have explored as many different genres of music as Mr. Cooder, and he's mastered each of them, depending on where he was at that point in his life. The guy's one of the world's best guitarists, both spiritually and technically, and far under-recognized in my book. He was one of the first guitarists who introduced me to the joy of delta blues and bottleneck slide guitar. Got any of that, Bill?

I'm not going to rate this.. its not bad once in a while.. but I'm hearing it too often for some reason.. it might be time to introduce an over played rating rather than musical quality/like/dislike scale..

Ah... to have lived Ry Cooder's life and played with the many outstanding artists he has been fortunate enough to play with all around the world! This song is just one more example of his excellent collaborations! And a beautiful piece--if not played too terribly often.
A beautiful and soothing way to start my morning. I turned it way up and swayed happily along smiling. Hope the rest of the day goes this well! Thanks for playing this. Lovely!
