I never liked this song. This sounds a lot like a 50s song to me, the kind I did not like. This is not REM for me
"sucko barfo" is gaining on this recording! Everybody poops!
My reason for commenting: while searching this song on google, (for some reason) the comment about "What is that supposed to be? Meaningful?",etc. - came up on the first page of my search, & thus; led me here. I, for one, find this song to be extremely meaningful; if one had half-a-mind (heart), to truly realise just HOW really meaningful it's message IS, I'm sure they'd agree. And YES, the simplicity of it was obviously intentional. I think if people were able to look beneath the surface(ahem!), look outside their own little worlds (much as the video for this song suggests) then maybe they would "get it". This song is epic, in my opinion, & comes to us from a band that'll forever remain known for the indelible mark it's left on the social & spiritual consciousness of people throughout the world. To me, commenter, you have proven yourself to be one of extreme insensitivity, shallowness.. and quite frankly, a dullard (my opinion). Thank you, and have a blessed day. EVERYBODY is a Critic!

I do enjoy the original version of this song but, man, this Live version does HURT!
Everybody Hurts....when they hear this song. OK, obviously not everybody, judging from the comments, but in my opinion this is exactly the type of song REM should never do! REM doesn\'t do slow well at all.
A great song, but this is far from the best recording of the best performance...

No, not necessarily deep.
He made lyrics that read like cryptic crosswords and after doing so much of that, I can understand he felt the need to come up with something as plain as this, without a double meaning or hidden message.
Just tell it like it is!

Nothing worse than having to listen to a tone deaf audience. I\'d much rather listen to the studio version.
It\'s pretty moving to listen to REM doing such a plain, direct song. Knowing what sort of \'difficult\' stuff they do usually, makes the message of this one more impressive and meaningful.
A bit like listening to Peter Gabriel doing Don\'t Give Up.

Don't think you mean Revolution 9 which wasn't foisted - it was just a crazy experimental track deep in the album.
This was a massively promoted hit song.
This is also very simple - lyrically, musically et. and very moving and emotional.
Rev 9 is a crazy complicated weird ride.
