When they come to take you down
When they bring that wagon round
When they come to call on you
And drag your poor body down

Just one thing I ask of you
Just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darling, Sugaree

Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me

You thought you was the cool fool
And never would do no wrong
You had everything sewed up tight
How come you lay awake all night long

Just one thing I ask of you
Just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darling, Sugaree

Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me

Well in spite of all you gained
You still have to stand out in the pouring rain
One last voice is calling you
And I guess it's time you go

Just one thing I ask of you
Just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darling, Sugaree

Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me

Well shake it up now, Sugaree
I'll meet you at the jubilee
And if that jubilee don't come
Maybe I'll meet you on the run

Just one thing I ask of you
Just one thing for me
Please forget you knew my name
My darling, Sugaree

Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me
Shake it, shake it, Sugaree
Just don't tell them that you know me

This isn't a cover. This is a tribute. Fine for a local watering hole but why would this be recorded?
My spidey sense indicates an LP Giobbi "Garcia" track is imminent.
I love the Graham Parker version. Actually I thought it was his song to begin with!
This one took me a while... as did phosporescent... love his hew stuff too
More Dead and Dead covers gargoyle! Jk…RP crew. Keep it spinning. 🥏
RP introduced me to Song for Zula. That is a remarkable track especially for the lyrics. That led me to digging into and then really digging Phosphorescent. Now you drop this GD cover on me. You know me RP. Now I need to see them in concert.

Good enough.  The fact that it isn't "Dead Enough" doesn't matter to me.  I guess, you had to be there.

For me, too close to the original to be worth the effort.

It's time we all started a rumour that Matthew Houck is Gerry's unacknowledged son. You kind of have to stretch your imagination to find complaints with this cover. I'm leaving my imagination unstretched and loving the legacy this celebrates....

Haven't you ever heard of Gerry Jarcia?
Dyslexics untie!

Indeed, however, um, that's more of a Spoonerism

Well, there is a Dead version ... so you're not crazy.   Well, I mean you may be crazy, but it's not because of THIS.
Shake it Shake it Ferndale. Hope everyone is ok
Surprised that no one  has mentioned Steve Miller.  Voice sounds very similar to me.
I'm certain he's got something going on. Not feelin' it.
I just can't feel the heart.
I can't get beyond that name.

Just so you know, the original version of this song is from Jerry Garcia's first solo album and isn't a Dead song.  But the lyrics were written by Robert Hunter who wrote the lyrics for many of the Dead's songs.

And the Grateful Dead played this song many. many times.

The Grateful Devotees. Jerry Garcia is now immortal.

The Grateful Diabetics?

A little too Grateful Deady for me,  but to each their own... Bill musta seen this comment--the next song he played was the GD.

I'd recommend playing more from Phosphorescent. "Song For Zula" is tremendous. Alternatively, the cover of "Terrapin Station" from the Day of the Dead album is equally tremendous.
What a sweet jazzed up outro. Yes definitley an 80s sound but still some really good moments nonetheless.
no kidding...not the GD....very nice.
its peppy

No complaints about the cover, but Gerry??

I dig it.  But Jenny Lewis's contribution can barely be heard.  Maybe it's just a bad mix.
One of the few Dead song I really love.
Very nice cover. More danceable.
This is good. But, I have this strange feeling like I'm listening to the Grateful Dead. It's both the style and the vocals.

I don't hate them for that, it's a good sound for sure.

SO much better than the 'DEAD' , but his voice sounds too much the same, so still gets a "1" from me.

Whatever happened to "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."?

His version is an evolution of the Dead sound. That's why their music lives forever.

I like it and will rate it highly, even though it's not the original. At least this is not the same studio version I have heard, by now, probably more than 500 times since first listening. An honest homage.

Exactly.

Day of the Dead is a great compilation.  More!
It’s a great cover of a great song....... love it
This is a great tribute album. The cover of "Terrapin Station" is sublime. Other standouts include "Black Muddy River," "St. Stephen," and "Franklin's Tower." The War on Drugs cover of "Touch of Grey" could have been better.

Yes, but that's a mighty good rhythm going there...

And the GD/JG were less ego driven than other bands, so the distinction is a bit less important (unless you're trying to find/buy the original track) -
And this version is still not up to the same level as JG's; still a 7, just barely, Long Live RP!!
I like!
BIG phan of Phosphorescent!
vocalist sounds a lot like Steve Forbert.

I guess I'll be one of the few to say I like this better than the original. Not a dead fan by a long shot - this at least feels like it has some ground.

I don't know the original but other GD-songs I do know give me reason to agree with you.
They are ok, but it's just tooo similar to have any merit
I would rather hear the GD version, which is really saying something! Or nothing really.
Absolutely LOVE this song. Absolutely HATE this version. Please play Jerry's studio version.

Bought the CD based on this.  7 so far, could go up. pxd

Ditto
Jerry's version gets a 9 from me, maybe a 10. This cover, while he sounds like Jerry, seems a bit too fast, and not as much agony in his voice.

Coattails though, so this gets a 7

I've heard of Jenny Lewis, but not Phosphorescent Lewis.

 I like it
GD version is much, much better.
