I was perched outside in the pouring rain
Trying to make myself a sail
Then I'll float to you my darlin'
With the evening on my tail
Although not the most honest means of travel
It gets me there nonetheless
I'm a heartless man at worst, babe
And a helpless one at best
Darling I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy, before I go
Oh, darling I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my heart
Oh I'm often false explaining
But to her it plays out all the same
and although I'm left defeated
It get's held against my name
I know you got plenty to offer baby
But I guess I've taken quite enough
Well I'm some stain there on your bedsheet
You're my diamond in the rough
Darling I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy
before I go
Oh, darling I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my heart
I know that thereÂŽre writings on the wall
But Darling I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy
After my heart
Oh I'll be there waiting for you (repeat)
Trying to make myself a sail

Not degrading for the woman to wash the man's clothes though presumably? How does that work?
I love almost anything a musician writes and performs. Paolo is a favourite. Except this pos. Bathe your skin? ok. Wash your nickers? Far too degrading. The chick would puke. What next? Blow her nose? It rhymes.

Most women respond to love expressed as an act of service, and washing your lover's clothes (including their underwear) seems to me entirely uncontentious. I sometimes wash my partner's clothes because I love her, and because she washes mine.

Still think that Paolo Nutini is an amazingly versatile singer with incredible lyrics (if you are on his wavelength and get what he's singing about). Even my teenage daughters listen to him. To me, he's just timeless and has a great sense of humor about himself as well. Thank you, RP, for playing his music.

I was encouraged by "New Shoes" from his first CD, but the rest of it sounded like songs even American Idol wouldn't use. I'm not sure about his lyrical capabilities yet, but this song shows signs that he may yet emerge as the real deal.

Excuse me but I'm not so sure too many women out there would like this creepy stalker with the oddball Burl Ivesish voice washing their clothes.
Voice and music style make me think of Loudon Wainwright III.
Am I alone in this?
(Sorry if this posts twice -- computer issues.)
love love love paolo nutini - I prefer Better Man, Pencil Full of Lead, New Shoes and, of course, Iron Sky but I'm glad to hear him on radio paradise
It's interesting. There are so many songs of men being abject in love, but this song makes me cringe with embarrassment. The character he plays is so pathetic.
Don't we all love candy? And haven't we all been raised with the message not to ask for it. How ironic.
So coool, that you're playing Paolo Nutini
It's ok...I'd have given it a 6 but my wife said 8, and I know when to pick my fights so...8 it is.

I'd be happy to say these things, and even to admit to being a stain on the bedsheet. I suspect yer man Paolo won't have much trouble getting his "candy", though, as the vulnerable feeling man can be quite attractive to many women, and he's a pretty fit guy too. The voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but it is real, unlike some cringe-making falsetti I've heard (step forward, Morrissey). 7 from the Albaphile Nottingham jury.

I had the pleasure of seeing him and his band up close and personal at the Guitar Center in Boston a few years ago. Each and every one of the members is not only talented but they are all amazing in the looks department too! Maybe it is just me and my affinity for the Scottish! :)
This sounds particularly pathetic coming right after Al Green.

But I'll respond to the substance.
When I feel embarrassment on behalf of another person exhibiting cringe-worthy behavior, that is called "empathy", defined as "vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another". I imagine that you have experienced it, though perhaps not in this context.
What has Scotland or the Scottish got to do with it? I made no mention of either.
By "complete indecision", I mean a complete absence of decision. Not an oxymoron.
Now I'll admit that "pathetic little whiner" is rather too harsh, and likely what prompted your attack in the first place. Mr. Nutini may be a fine man, and my comment should have been directed at the persona he puts forward in the song rather than him as a person. But I find still that persona and the way it is embodied in the music and voice infuriating and difficult to listen to.

Sometimes 'distinctive sound' isn't a compliment. In the case of Mr. Nutini, I'd use it as high praise. I'd take one Paolo Nutini over a thousand sound alike popsters any day. Oddball quavery phrasing, multi-culti accent and all.
Because it's the opposite of Al Green?
Please make it stop.

But I find still that persona and the way it is embodied in the music and voice infuriating and difficult to listen to.
So - you're cringing in embarrassment. Why? YOU'RE not the one singing. Unless you hail from Scotland, or are Scottish by descent, or... wait a minute - none of that matters! My comment is: You wrote "Pathetic little whiner, who can't even decide on a pitch. He slides around from note to note with complete indecision." First: You're making personal judgements on someone you don't even know. Second: You use two forms of "decide" in the same paragraph which, in effect, is a form of indecision on its own. Third: You refer to "complete indecision" which is an oxymoron. Were it "complete," it would be "decision." "Indecision" is an act of incomplete decision.
And now, it's time for me to remind myself of my credo: "I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man (or woman.)" I love Paolo Nutini's music.

You should remind yourself of your credo (which can be found on 780,000 different pages across the web) more often, because your cute rhetorical flourish is nothing but a personal attack, and a fine example of "making personal judgments on someone you don't even know".
