Brings back memories.
I saw these guys long ago in Redbank NJ at a nice venue. And not knowing much about their following - I though I would dress nicely. Man, it was a bunch of hippies, which is fine by me - I have my hippie roots. I just wished I had worn a different outfit, lol.  It's great hearing them now after so long.  RP keeps bringing back old sounds I forgot about. Thank you!

Had to knock this down 1 point; it's a jam in a mode like so-called "smooth jazz" but in this case performed by amazingly skilled, actual musicians. Compare to Ramsey Lewis "Wade In The Water" - the sound is similar, the playing is good, but it never resolves to a recognizable tune and that plays with your mind- I want it to break into a tune...

An excellent album. But ...WAIT! THERE"S MORE!  They gots lotsa albums. This one is pretty 'accessible.'  And if you access it and dig it, try some Frank and Joe Show, then some Bill Frisell. There's a world of intense electric jazz that you never hear via any broadcast medium it seems. RP is pretty cool, a doorway to another world (on a good day!)

I definitely see your point re. jazz, but for me one of the best things about live music/comedy IS the improvisation. I also love it when you see it (as seems to happen more often these days) on TV comedies. I would draw the line, however, at student improv theatre, which is unacceptable on all levels.

Actually, I have never gotten improvised comedy at all.  I always feel a little sorry for those guys.  It's just not funny.  I was reading David Byrne's recent book on music (How Music Works, highly not recommended)...he said something interesting about improvisation - it was used by Jazz artists simply to stretch out live sessions.  It's basically about more time for dancing and giving the paying customers more of the same.  It was never meant to be "genius".

Medeski Martin & Wood's live performances are renowned for their exploratory nature. Their concerts usually involve extended improvisations, which may be both arrhythmic and atonal, an aspect of their musicianship that is rarely documented in the studio. They also embark on an occasional acoustic tour, reverting back to the instrumentation that they began with.

Why I love them - MMW is one of the most unique jazz fusion bands of today. Their style is in a league of their own and their sounds are out of this world. Who needs a vocalist when you have an amazing keyboardist, bassist and drummer.

Saw these guys in Asheville in 1996 or 1997 at the Be Here Now (standing room  only, capacity of about 200) with a bunch of tripped-out hippies. Would have been more fun if I'd had what they were having.

Basically i started for being, on 60´s, a "rock-listener", but i give particular attention when i discover that the talent flows, independent of the style, and when i discover this in other musical areas, classic-music, jazz, blues, folk, rytman-blues, country, opera, spiritual, folcore traditional, acoustic, celtic, fado, reggae, flamengo, african, world music, bossa-nova, soul, latin-american, tango-based,  etc.; about how many to the styles appeared more recently, hip-hop, rap, trance-dance, house, and mix´s of DJ´s, etc, even so understands, i prefers not to comment, being to the criterion and taste of each one; to appreciate case the case.

for some important reason I listen carefully RP-Station and a competent team that is ahead, that make a difference in the world of  music radio.

i remember and i detach here "The Sparrow Quartet" is an American acoustic music group that formed in 2005. Its members include Abigail Washburn (banjo and voice), Béla Fleck (banjo), Casey Driessen (violin), and Ben Sollee (cello) (not avaiable, while group,  in RP Station)
