Perhaps a strange comment, but I always played the sound track to American Beauty while grading my students' college chemistry exams. I mentioned this to a colleague and she started doing the same. And I always finished grading them the same day as the exam because that is what students deserve. Oh, and I like Lester's speech at the end of the movie...
Youngest son of Alfred Newman, famous film composer. Cousin of Randy. Runs in the family!

I own two movie soundtrack albums. This one, and In the Bedroom. Both are by Mr. Newman, and both are truly extraordinary.
Reminds me of the theme song of the HBO series Six Feet Under.

A fair point, and you're right, it was a multi-faceted movie. However, seeing as the central character was Kevin Spacey's menopausal man, I think it's not unreasonable for his middle-aged travails and fantasies to be the main thing that I remember about it.
The music was so important in this great movie.

Both films - American Beauty and K-Pax - are as great as are their soundtracks :) Kevin Spacey before Frank Underwood. (Not that F.U. isn't good. Just well..not as likable as these two characters, Prott especially).

Not so fast there, big boy. I ride a motorbike and enjoy chatting up women from 20-year-olds to 80-year-olds, always without lecherous intent ... well, almost always without lecherous intent. My youth may be gone, but not my enthusiasm for life.
And if I'm middle-aged now, I'll live to be 120.

This is great music... hard to believe this movie was 11 years ago... the theme of the movie is that there's no going back... sigh...

Thomas Newman is such a fine creator of film scores, no matter the genre.
Thomas Newman is a brilliant composer. Also check out the soundtracks to "A Series of Unfortunate Events," and even "Finding Nemo." There are many more, I just can't think of them at the moment.
