Mama was queen of the mambo, Papa was king of the Congo
Deep down in the jungle I started bangin' my first bongo
Every monkey'd like to be in my place instead of me
'Cause I'm the king of bongo, baby I'm the king of bongo bong
I went to the big town where there is a lot of sound
From the jungle to the city looking for a bigger crown
So I play my boogie for the people of big city
But they don't go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
I'm the "king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come, baby
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Nobody'd like to be in my place instead of me
'Cause nobody go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo, baby I'm the king of bongo bong
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come, baby
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come
They say that I'm a clown, making too much dirty sound
They say there is no place for little monkey in this town
Nobody'd like to be in my place instead of me
'Cause nobody go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come, baby
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come
Bangin' on my bongo all that swing belongs to me
I'm so happy there's nobody in my place instead of me
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town

Hate this one. dont even know why. just makes me sad and depressed and angry
Cute, but this was done back in 1998, when he was a young man? After a few thousand times playing it from now to then what do you think he feels about it now, eh? Wonder if it's like one of those tattoo's you get when young and on a drunk wild night and now, some 26 years later, you find yourself wondering...."WHAT was I THINKING!?!"
Not that I'm projecting, of course. Cute song, but.... 🤣

I love this bongo BONG!
and yet… not a bongo to be heard😳🤓
Why do songs like this always light up the red bars?!
I don't smoke pot so I listen to this to get a great buzz. Love Manu Chau!

This is one of the few songs on the RP playlist I can't stomach. I listen for hours at a time and almost always like or love everything. But it's got a 6.1 average soooooo..... PSD!

Man this song kicks ass,,,,,
This is a cover of a Mano Negra song “King of Bongo”. The original was a plain rock song, much more energetic, and has its roots in a 1939 recording of “King of the Bongo Bong” by the trumpeter Roy Eldridge. Bongo Bong was Manu Chao's first single as a solo artist and is obviously a tongue-in-cheek cover by Mano Negra's own former frontman. But I guess most people hear that dive bomb jingle and immediately dismiss it as childish and crap. Well, to each their own…
Audible atrocity.
Love it

No ambivalence here. I'm never in the mood for this.

Maybe this comment is why I already had this rated a 6. I have to up that rating though. The fact that I'm so torn about how I feel about this song is testimony enough about how special it is.

Well,,,, there is a panel of high minded individuals who sit near the crater of Mount Pinatubo. Everyday the fumes from the still steaming volcano intoxicate them. They then move onto a vision quest where songs come to them in their dream state. They then come back to a conscious state where relay their experiences to one and other. They then chose. Its either that,,,,or Bill picks them
This song is bong.
Ya can't go wrong.
But he don't look strong.
Is his shadow long?
Is it Chinese or dong?
It would be if it's fong.
I use to play majong.

Back in college me and my friend used to sing "King of the Bongload" whilst partaking in such. Those were good times.

Yes, this takes me back. It was a big hit in Europe about 12 or so years ago — they used to play it on MTV alot. Quirky and fun, somehow gets under your skin in a good way. Though I remember thinking it's a song that just wouldn't get airplay in North America. Thanks, RP for reminding me about those good times in Brussels.
Agreed . . . annoying.
Repeats a bit don't ya think?
Fine piece, thanks. More of Manu's other excellent material, e.g. Lagrimas d'oro, please!
I love this song! Heard it for the first time on a radio station in the republic of Georgia in 2004. I've been annoying people with it since then!
Exhilarating, vibey, fun, happy... My best listens to this album have been while driving through Mozambique. Takes me straight there on this sunny Sunday afternoon!

I have been to three Manu Chao concerts and they were just amazing. And all the people at the concert seemed to be enjoying as well. Plus, Manu Chao has a very strong social and (anti)political messages, so it kind of adds another dimensions to their concert. Saying they are terrible live is quite surprising, they are one of the greatest live bends I've heard...

Thanks for sharing — and I completely get what you said about bottling 'that vibe.' I was living in Paris for those two years and that's where I learned of his music.
I saw Manu Chao give a free concert during the infamous G8 protests at Genoa on 2001. There was a sea of young Italian, Spanish, German, English, Greek (and the rest of Europe) anti-capitalist protesters loving it. For me Manu Chao has come to represent those times - between the WTO protests Seattle in 1999 and Genoa 2001 - when everyone was talking about the Zapatistas and neo-liberalism and the so-called 'anti-globalization movement' (meaning anti-globalized capitalism). Manu Chao bottled that vibe on this album. After 2001 of course that particular timeframe ended and the anti-war movements kicked off after 9-11 and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

What happened to people taking personal responsibility for the way they are feeling...
Look you create your world! SO IF IT SUCKS TO YOU - CHANGE THE CHANNEL!
I always preface my own mindset/feelings when I say I am not happy with some song or other, but I know it's me not the music.
Someone somewhere out there will love something - I personally LOVE Manu Chau - but I lived in Europe and had many good times with it in the background. I personally love the variety and styles of music played here and am not always in the mood for every song they play when they play it - but it's ME that's the constant not the Music because as you see around you - others Love the same song you are dissing. So get over yourselves.
1.) This isn't your personal radio station - this is Bill and Rebecca's
2.) If you don't like most of what they play - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
3.) If you are super unhappy about life - see someone else, go for a walk in nature, do something to try and change it.

This isn't the sort of song I would normally rate particularly high, but it has major sentimental value to me. The two bars that I frequented throughout my late 20s and early-to-mid 30s had very eclectic jukeboxes (one bar begat the other), and this CD was on there. This particular track was a favorite of one of the bartenders (and owner of the second bar), and always brings back fond memories when I hear it.
To you, Thom. May you rest in peace.

Hi,
Thanx U Calypsus for writting all "King of Mambo" lyrics.
I never had all the real words written about it in french, indeed... anyway if you want to know about "la Mano Negra" Manu's before band, you can ask me..
More alternatif and political positive way, it's finely OK for ...
PS : the last time I've eaten witch Manu and all the band, that was in Valence- Drome- 26000 - France and not in Spain !!!
C'est tout pour aujourd'hui...

Mama was queen of the mambo
Papa was king of the Congo
Deep down in the jungle
I started bangin' my first bongo
Every monkey'd like to be
In my place instead of me
Cause I'm the king of bongo, baby
I'm the king of bongo bong
I went to the big town
Where there is a lot of sound
From the jungle to the city
Looking for a bigger crown
So I play my boogie
For the people of big city
But they don't go crazy
When I'm bangin' in my boogie
I'm the "king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
They say that I'm a clown
Making too much dirty sound
They say there is no place for little monkey in this town
Nobody'd like to be in my place instead of me
Cause nobody go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
I'm the king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Bangin' on my bongo all that swing belongs to me
I'm so happy there's nobody in my place instead of me
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo baby I'm the king of bongo bong

Hear me when I come, baby, king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong

Bangin' on my bongo all that swing belongs to me
I'm so happy there's nobody in my place instead of me
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo baby I'm the king of bongo bong
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come, baby, king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
