I could be a rambler from the seven dials
I don't pay taxes 'cause I never file
I don't do business that don't make me smile
I love my aeroplane 'cause she's got style
I'm a treetop flyer

I will fly any cargo you can pay to run
these bush league pilots just can't get the job done
Got to fly down into the canyons, never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run
For a treetop flyer

I'm flyin' low, I'm in high demand
Fly fifteen feet off the Rio Grande
I'll blow the mesquite right up off the sand
Seldom seen, especially when I land
I'm a treetop flyer
Born Survivor

People been asking me, "Where'd you learn to fly that way?"
Was over in Vietnam, chasin' NVA
The government taught me, and they taught me right,
Stay under the treeline, and you might be alright
I'm a treetop flyer

So I'm comin' home, I'm runnin' low and fast
I promised my woman this is gonna be my last
I get the ship down, I tie her fast
then some old boy walks up, says "Hey son, you wanna make some fast cash?"
I'm a treetop flyer

Well there's things I am, and there's things I'm not
I am a smuggler and I could get shot
Aint going to die, I ain't goin' to get caught,
'Cause I'm a flyin' fool and my aeroplane is just too hot
I'm a treetop flyer
Born survivor

Still think so.

So he preferred Pepsi; what's the big deal?
I'm still amazed that I got to see him jam at a modest little gathering in '85 or '86 in Farrand Field, a patch of grass between some dorms on the CU campus. He'd been through some struggles, and some were saying they were afraid he might be washed-up...but as we heard, he can make a single acoustic guitar sound like many people are playing! Guitar wizard!
I was privileged to see CSN live at Red Rocks several years ago. Crosby seemed stoned, Nash seemed mentally not into it, but Stills carried the whole show.

Nice picking and voice combo, but I agree it seems a to be a song from the 70's. All that sex, drugs, don't cut your hair and defy the man stuff. Not all in this song, but of that era. Very nostalgic.
5 yrs later, I’m a Tree Top flyer too!
Oh hell yes.  This song really showcases both his voice and his sublime guitar playing.  Saw him do this live, just him, his guitar, a microphone, and a stool --- it was fantastic.
Finally decided to buy the album through the handy-dandy RP Amazon link.

Yikes, it's $89.95!  Guess I could get the cassette for $39.50{#Eek}

Ha! Same thing here. Although I wish Mr Stills would put his teeth back in.

Nice, more Stephen please.  "Illegal Stills" has some nice solo stuff, as does the first solo record with it amazing line-up of guest artists.
And the first Manassas, of course.

Stephen Stills and Peter Tork used to have an act in the Catskills.  They auditioned for the Monkees together.  If they picked the other guy we would have had Crosby, Tork, Nash and Young and the Monkees might have sounded a little different.

Wow...what a story teller!  Wikip says he is the writer...and to tell a story that is so easy to imagine...maybe growing up in the 80's and seeing spectacular drug busts helps with the imagery.

Recently this has been one of my favorite albums. He's always been a great guitar player, but this album really brings it out to center stage.

Nice!

Nice set by the way!
Funny, I remember this WAAAAAY before 1991.  I mean, I was still young enough to believe I could also have an illustrious and profitable career as a smuggling treetop flyer.  And you know that had to be back in the middle '70s, "over in Viet Nam chasing NVA."

I'm sort of staid and responsible these days, falling asleep on the sofa in front of the TV ... dreaming about all the adventures that didn't quite happen.

Pehaps (and for once) not far off the mark. "Black Queen" from his eponymous solo album credits a bottle of Jose Cuervo Gold. I don't share the "yawn," BTW. Stills is a stone genius, unfortunately too stoned too many times.

I don't mean to be a hater, but this, to me, is an insipid song.  Many people really like it, so I'm not rating it because I don't want to bring it down.  Nice guitar, but the words don't do a thing for me...

Essentially agree with your words of wisdom and tolerance.
But you have to admit that goes beyond the tolerable, the attitude of immature child, do a "spot" advertising with the slogan "Me and God hate this song." (Tasting more than doubtful, and even hateful) and placed randomly on the pages of the songs.
Other users will have the job of "creating" a free critique, positively or negatively, being supported in their arguments and personal taste, doing research on the songs and artists, and secondly, by way of constant challenge, one applies the " spot" by way of provocation which seems to come from an angry child, for, then, laugh at a good laugh.....
The forum of the RP should be a platform for free expression of ideas, free of censorship, but this freedom must be based on mutual respect, to not fall into anarchy low customs.
Or is it not?

Love it! {#Music}

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion...it's what makes dialogue interesting. I am a sexagenarian and like to think I have an open mind to at least appreciate what others have to say as long as it isn't offensive or derogatory in any way..."an it harm none".
Perhaps others should do the same without prejudice.

Well said, on so many counts.

Kudos for understanding what calypsus was talking about. His/her comments leave me puzzled most of the time, but I think you got the meaning exactly right. (I think.)

Your comments about the unfiltered nature of this site are spot-on. BillG puts it out there that "everything posted should be appropriate for all ages," and that's it. Except for the occasional cuss-word, RP actually is all-age appropriate. I wouldn't like to see this site filtered.

Even though the vast majority of the people are thoughtful and interesting, there are a few trolls on the comment boards, as you pointed out. (I find it both sad and fascinating that some joker thinks he actually speaks for God's musical taste - with a crummy graphic at that.) I actually feel bad for the folks that insist on posting negative comment after negative comment. Interestingly, the trolls almost always leave after a while because their negative comments generate negative attention. Funny how that works, isn't it?

P.S. Really tired of the post below. It was cute the first time, now it's just annoying.

Back in the day had drinks with his dad and young bride at the bar at the hotel Menendes in Cali Colombia we talked about his shrimp farming business and he asked if we had ever heard of his son. Nice guy.

Have to disagree with you, his covers are things he is passionate about, such sailing and flying, certainly not rehashing already populist music hits. Sure he makes a ton of money, but its not because he's sold out, he created his own brand before that was a common. Apparently a little splashed out of the gene pool from his Uncle Warren... Nice aviation set Bill!

What a talent. This reminded me of a clip I saw of him performing "4 + 20" on the Dick Cavett show years ago. Someone has been kind enough to post it to Youtube... hopefully it will stay up forever. (click here)
Was having dinner on the River Walk in San Antonio one evening. Some roaming guitar player came around, and I figured it would be just the same old busker crap. But I requested this and he played it perfectly. What a pleasant surprise! Tipped him $5.

I saw Stephen Stills live about 10 years ago and he did this with a full band. Dang, I wish I'd had a DAT recorder! It was a phenomenal arrangement. (It was also at the Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater, a truly splendid small outdoor venue)

I hate it when that happens. It's a big reason why I don't go to Boomer-band shows anymore. Good song, though. Unbelieveable that so much of Stills's stuff is out of print.
This is apparently the song that inspired Ray Lamontagne to quit his factory job and pursue a music career. From Wikipedia... LaMontagne found a job at a shoe factory in Lewiston where worked 65 hours a week. One morning at 4 a.m., LaMontagne heard Stephen Stills' song "Treetop Flyer" on the radio as it awoke him for an early work shift. After purchasing the Stills Alone album, LaMontagne decided that he wanted to quit his job at the shoe factory and start a career as a singer-songwriter.
