There is a time and place for all kinds of music. I like David Lindley as he is a very talented guitarist and has a knack for catchy songs. But mostly because he seems to enjoy himself and have fun on the recordings I have heard from him. He is just as worthy as Dylan or Mitchell.
Having said that, I would get bored listening to him all day... I think Bill has just the right balance of music, so please do not play less Dylan and Mitchell ;-)

This is a Calypso by Lord Kitchener who was a Trinidadian calypsonian. There are a lot of low ratings concerning this tune which I think is attributed to the fact that most don't understand what "da 'ting" is. Many, (if not all Calypsos), have a sexual connotation to them, so you can take it from there. Yes, it's different, but after living in the Virgin Islands in my 20's and hearing this music in it's element it certainly grew on me. David does an excellent job with it.

He's pretty dern worthy on his own. He has been playing with Jackson Browne (since 1972), also with Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Dolly Parton and Curtis Mayfield (for starters). He has is own cred! One of my favorites of all time! If you can find one, watch a documentary on him, he's an engima.

I first encountered Mr. Dave when I was in college in Claremont, CA where he lives - he played one of our 5-college parties with some incarnation of his El Rayo X band, and I was instantly taken by his commanding skills on anything stringed (steel, Weissenborn, saz, fiddle, you name it), and of course his ample and quirky sense of humor. I used to bump into him in local Claremont stores like Wolfe's market, and I can say he is a genuinely nice human being, as anyone in town would attest. Since then I've caught him live all over the country and it is always an amazing show. Assuming he resumes touring in 2021, I highly recommend his shows, which usually consist of just him and a dozen or so stringed instruments, and plenty of hilarious stories. Rock on Mr. Dave.
I remember seeing Mt. Dave in a "hole-in-the-wall" bar in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. The place was PACKED!! and he entered from behind the back bar in the balcony and squeezed down the stairs to the stage. As he sat putting in his ear monitors, he looked up and deadpanned, "It looks like a fire hazard in here." Looked back down and fiddled with his monitors a moment and then, looking up, said equally dryly, "That'll fuck with some people's minds."
So, yes, he's a great entertainer.

Hi. I actually really like Gimme Da'Ting, and I was googling around because I couldn't determine elsewhere whether David Lindley actually wrote it, or if it was from someone else. I am using it in a song list I'm making in Rhapsody Online, and I wanted to see if I could get another name for it, because Lindley's cover/recording of it is the only one I've found.
I find it odd that some posters don't like the song that much. I find it very good. Perhaps it takes that Sears Roebuck taste. At any rate, I find all of Lindley's stuff very enjoyable, and generally a good dose of what I think of as reality. My story of Lindley is my friend Phil, a serious Dead fan, taking me and the Rayo dog to Pacific Beach for a rest (and to buy his pickup I think) the Summer I was trying to divorce my future ex-wife, whom I now count as a very dear, but thankfully distant friend, and still one of the most beautiful women I've ever known too, if that matters (it really doesn't to me, but it's good story material). He played me Very Greasy, which he had on CD, and I was immediatly hooked, though oddly my favorite track at that time was Tiki Torches at Twilight. Now I think "Pay the man" is, but frankly I so far enjoy all his stuff. Anyway, I now work on the Rhapsody Online project and listen to more music than I thought I ever would, and I find Lindley one of my favorites. Enough lavishment of praise though.
So I want to know if Gimme is really written by David, and even so if it has any other heritage, which somehow I think it does. Can someone help me on that? Can I get some spelling for any alternate tracks?

Actually, no. This sounds more like old Bahamian music (Bahamas). Tiki is a homage to the South Pacific.

I'm all about fun these days - mostly because I'm not having much of it. I really wanted to dance to this song, but the back will barely let me WALK, much less dance. The El Rayo X vibe on this song is cool but not quite authentic - but so what? The production is clear and the playing is hip (though Kitchener's bass player does less and plays it groovier) - the best thing in it for me is the percussion. Usually, playing every instrument in the kit is a weakness, but this guy is really driving the song - and, if you can dig this, he's matching the sophisticated wit of the song with his playing (great sounding cymbals, too), and he's nicely up in the mix and gets a wide pan, too.

I didn't see the answer to this old question in the comments. SecondHandSongs.com tells me that "Gee Me the Thing" by Lord Kitchener released in 1982.
All thses years I thought that DL wrote tis piece and now I find that
