If RP isn't worth something, then the random listener will move on to one of the other thousands of other music outlets on the internet. So the fact that someone took the time to post a message that RP is playing too much classic rock is another way of saying, "I like RP, but maybe you could dial back the classic rock." I know I spent plenty of time moaning about all the Grateful Dead RP played 10 years ago. My whining worked, though, and now I want to shut the door on the other whiners I was just thinking of uploading some dead...

Ah yes, my very favorite type of new poster: the kind that start a brand new thread with their very first post and complain about how RP isn't exactly as they think it should be.
Welcome!

sirdroseph wrote:Regarding classic rock, I would actually listen occasionally to an all deep track Classic Rock station. I would like it if RP would play more classic rock. I get my new music fix through college radio, it is actually the fantastic classic rock selections that are my favorite part of RP.
Mixed with the newer stuff. I could enjoy an all deep track station, too. Not 24/7 but major doses would be cool. Been listening to Pearadio a lot lately and getting the giddyup music I've been missing, craving. Didn't know it until I went over there, for the first time in months. It was only because all the urls changed here and I haven't updated my media player yet. The RP that was 10 years plus ago that hooked me played the old deeper tracks that disappeared from terradio. Like anything else, things change, evolve. The mix is different now. Its slower and way more laid back than the early days. Looking at the playlist just now, it seems that anything pre 1990's is only about 10% of the mix now. But as SFW mentioned, its about the market. RP is now portable/mobile and does compete with portable music outlets. It would be interesting to know how much of RP's listener base is exclusively mobile. The future is wireless.

Play those deep tracks that classic radio seem to avoid . Many listeners are not that musically balanced as most of the listeners are with RP. They have no interest in new music or songs they don't reconize. This change will lure them in and finally realized they can get turned on to the songs they may never have hear in their life time. Bill has a talent of mixing tunes and a little bit of a theme tread might work also. Just a little idea on how to make RP the best AAA Stream on the web. FreeForm WBCN comes in at a close second with Public radio WXPN in Philly is third. 25% of songs should cater to people who have no interest in new music or songs they don't recognize? They can crawl back into their warm comfort zone. Most people will listen to a classic rock station even if it only plays 1 song an hour that they really have an interest in hearing; the rest are just familiar thru repetition. Listen to RP for an hour and most people will hear that one song they are excited about and that will be enough to keep a lot of people around long enough to develop a real appreciation for either the eclectic listening or for the music itself. And that's the market. My initial hours at RP—that one magical evening years ago that permanently hooked me on the place—didn't include a single song with which I was already familiar. And yet I knew to my core that everything I was hearing was good. For me, at least, the oldies in the mix were/are not necessary to drag me in and keep me around. I have nothing against the few (the still and always few) cuts here that I also hear at odd earphones-free moments at work, the local oldies FM station chugging away with the same two dozen songs, but . . . bah. Bottom line? I'm still certain that Bill knows fucking exactly what he's doing—and man, does he do it good!

That John Lennon tune that was just played is a great example of the "deep" classic rock cuts I like to hear on RP
