I was today years old when I heard on the old-timey radio that Bruce Springsteen "gave" Patti Smith the song Because the Night.

"Gave" is what the raydio DJ said.  Curiosity piqued, I dug into this later.  Came across this fine article too:

Thirty+ years ago at a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage show I saw this young guy named Wynton playing trumpet in the Gospel tent (they said that Ellis Marsalis’ boy was good) and then walked over to see Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. A bit later, Jerry Lee Lewis snarled at the crowd “Any of mah wives out there?” But, like so many other things, times change.
