In a giant leap toward road safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has begun standardizing impaired-driving prevention technology in new vehicles in the fight against drunk driving. This action aligns with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and contributes to the Department’s National Roadway Safety Strategy.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law tasks the NHTSA with establishing a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that requires new passenger vehicles to feature advanced drunk and impaired-driving prevention technology. However, the implementation of this standard is contingent upon satisfying the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which mandates that any proposed standard be reasonable, practicable, and effective in reducing traffic crashes and related deaths.

Impaired-driving prevention technology, a critical strategy to reduce fatalities, is estimated to save society $280 billion in lost wages, medical expenses, and more. The Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking will provide crucial data to further the agency’s work in developing a standard to prevent driver impairment.
