Pardon me Madam, my name is Eve
I think it's time for you to leave
I don't believe that we have met
That's one thing you would not forget

In another time or life
When I was his only wife
When I was his only bride
Before I was torn out from his side

In the orchard apples are withering
In the shadows something is slithering
So go along there if you must
Try to do as I suggest
He's just a gathering of dust

And if he can't recall my name
Tell him to take his time, it's worth recovering
Look at me, and what I'm covered in
I'm covered in shame

I came back looking for my man
I wandered everywhere and then
I stood outside and gazed upon
A beautiful garden, a shimmering pond

See the sunlight on the leaves that dapple
Did you see my little teeth marks on the apple?
Don't close the door on the hand I'm offering
There is someone outside doing all the suffering

In the orchard, apples are withering
In the shadows, something is slithering
But in another time and life
When I was his only wife
When I was his only bride
Until I was torn out
Until I was torn out
Until I was torn out
From his side

Pardon me, Madam, my name is Eve
Pardon me, Madam, my name is Eve
I think it's time for one of us to leave

I am all for telling a story, but if you can't get the words you want to say, squeezed into the tune, then you need to scrap it and try again. Only since , I really do not care for costello, I say just scrap it. I do think the cd and the band are named right
I'm huge elvis costello fan, but this track is a bit questionable.
It appears that I have yet to post on this song. WTMECORP 5
More? We need more? Argh... every uploaded Costello song is a dagger in my heart. This guy is like a teenage punk band that just got out of a cryogenic freeze chamber. (cough, cough, hurl)

I'm a moderate fan of our Declan, but this one got me reaching for the mute button inside 5 bars. Some of his stuff, such as Shipbuilding and Watching The Detectives, was spot on, but, like The Clash, he couldn't half produce some turkeys as well. Still, kudos to him for continuing to experiment musically, even if his excursion into C&W was monumentally ill-judged...
Couldn't agree more. Very hit-or-miss with his stuff. From delightful to 'eugh' in one track change...

I've never been able to understand the appeal of this guy. He creates unique music, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
Deriviative of other EC material--espy from When I was Cruel.
