You're the lucky one
so I've been told
as free as A wind,
blowin' down the road
loved by many, hated by none
I'd say you were lucky 'cause I know what you've done
not A care in the world
not A worry in sight
everything's gunna be alright
cause you're the lucky one

You're the lucky one
always havin' fun
A jack of all trades a master of none
you look at the world with a smilin' eye
and laugh at the devil as his train goes by

Give you a song and A one night stand
you'll be looking at A happy man
'cause you're the lucky one.

Well you're blessed I guess
by never knowing which road your choosin'.
To you the next best thing
to playin' and winning is playin' and losin'

You're the lucky one I know that now
don't ask you why, when, where, or how
you look at the world thru your smilin' eye
and you laugh at the devil as his train goes by

Give you a song and A one night stand
and you'll be looking at A happy man
'cause you're the lucky one

Well you're blessed I guess
by never knowing which road your choosin'.
To you the next best thing
to playin' and winning is playin' and losin'

You're the lucky one I know that now
don't ask you why, when, where, or how
no matter where you're at, it's where you'll be
you can bet your luck won't follow me
just give you A song and A one night stand
you'll be looking at A happy man
cause you're the lucky one.

Mercifully, Robert Plant is nowhere in sight on this album.
I sometimes think that from the look on her face it's like "Hey, I'm a fiddle player, you want me to sing, too!?  Well...okay?!!?"

And the rest is music history, isn't it?  Blessed with two talents.  Lucky, indeed.

Highlow~
love Alison! and she can sing!!

As with all of her songs, her voice converts what would otherwise be an average song to a mesmerizing launch into an ethereal & existential experience.

This isn't an average song imo

Love Merlefest and saw Allison and Robert plant there...was a fantastic musical event, and of course, Doc and Merle!
I have this song stuck in my head a couple of times a week, every week
We had tickets to see Alison in May of '20.. Then Covid hit .. I'm still sad about missing her ..

Shout out to Champaign, IL!
This album is brilliant. I usually don't like live albums, but they are just so good. Polish and precision without losing the energy of live performance. First rate.

I guess it must be nice in a live performance.

TBH I prefer this to the Robert Plant collabs. But I'm not a huge fan either way. Just not my style, I suppose.

I can see that.  On one hand, it could be about being a lucky person for living life the want they want and everything come out fine.  On the other, it could be about someone who she is attracted to and would want to settle down with, but he's footloose and fancy free, looking for one night stands, so she's bitter about it.  Either way it's a beautiful song.

Thanks for throwing in the live stuff, Bill!  Love AKUS!!
Probably one of my favorites from Alison, although, there are SO many.... and I love everything she does!
No one sings it better!!

How lucky were we?

Old girlfriend of mine went to UHA......I went to a different school slightly south of there, but they were always known for their ability to attract great talent to the area. Plus radio KUHA. Won tickets to a Humble Pie concert at the Shaboo Inne. Sunday night, and 60 people there. I had my beer on the stage, and they played a great show.
This set is making think of Merlefest this past weekend. Tedeschi Drucks Band killed it Saturday night!

We're the lucky ones hearing this sweet bird sing.  Initially gave it an 8 but I'm kicking it up a notch.

Great

Funny banter on this album.... from crowd:  Alison I love you... from somewhere else in crowd:  I love you more....  from band:  This aint a race....

After watching her on PBS last night, I was wondering when I'd hear her on RP - made my day {#Sunny}

I saw Alison and Robert Plant at the NOLA Jazz Fest a year ago.  It was literally AMAZING!  Although she has some kinda strange otherworldly gaze that is a little disturbing.
hitting the nail on the proverbial head...i don't think i have ever heard alison
*strain* her voice to hit a note.

upped this from a 9 to a 10.... Goddess-like....
I absolutely love this song and the album New Favourite i first heard it on.  What a nice good morning.
I love Alison Krauss. No, seriously, I LOVE her. I have a huge crush on this woman. Besides an incredible voice, sincere humility, and amazing musicianship, she knows how to pick an ensemble of peers better than anyone in the acoustic space.
Such a pleasant and appealing voice.

I'm not sure what you mean...

Do you hate The Dead?  Or Alison Krauss?  I don't hate either really... but I give props to The Dead WAY before I would heap praises on AK&US.

I find this much much better than the stuff she did with Plant.  I don't know why but those recordings are not appealing to me.

Why is it that when you mix this woman's talent with Robert Plant the music sounds like shyte?
Traveling Wilbury syndrome?
Seriously, I'm not one for country but she has the voice of an angel!
Just beautiful!
What an amazing live performance.
Alison Krauss and Union Station is an amazing group of musicians. This song, scratch that, this whole albums explains that. {#Dance}
Recommended album, great musicianship may be found here.
OMG! a Melody!!! wow. a 9.
Far, FAR superior to her stuff with Robert Plant (and I'm a big Zep fan).
Just sublime.
She makes me want to forgive your ignorance. kindermanltd wrote:
I hate country but wow, have I always been impressed with her voice. She makes me want to like country.
I'm not a big bluegrass fan when it comes to recorded music though I respect it and the players, but it is a fun musical form to listen or dance to live though. Allison Krauss is on a whole other level beyond the musical form. Her singing is some of the best in any genre, an incredible singing voice that I absolutely love. Her fiddling and the rest of her top notch players in the band take it to another level, like the Beatles of bluegrass or something. I have all her albums, she is a favorite of mine yet playing a musical format I'm not a fan of. And I'd say New Favorite is one of my favorites, the musicianship on that record is astounding. The Lucky One is from that CD originally.
8 => 9

"Country"? Seems like both the country and the bluegrass crowds would probably call this bluegrass. The bluegrass folks sure aren't gonna give up Ms. Krauss without a fight! (What's that make the album with Plant? Dunno, dunno.)
Hey y'all thar is roots, bluegrass, folk and country. It ain't all country.
YAY! Jerry Douglas and no Robert Plant!

Agreed. I believe that Alison holds the record for most Grammy Awards by a female performer with 20.

I believe "Squeeze My Lemon" should be rightfully credited to a Mr. Howlin' Wolf
The melody should be credited to Howlin' Wolf's 'Killing Floor' but the lyric is most likely from Robert Johnson's from Traveling Riverside Blues. I say most likely because there was a song recorded in the same year (1937) called "She Squeezed My Lemon" by Arthur McKay so I don't think it's origin is clear.

I believe "Squeeze My Lemon" should be rightfully credited to a Mr. Howlin' Wolf; Robert just borrowed it for a minute, along with a few other things.

What a rare talent Alison Krauss is. She the members of Union Station are just sublime to hear live. One of those concerts that I hoped would never end! Superlatives fail...
9 -> 10 Wonderful song that makes my toes happy.
I love Alison Krauss.................. .........'nuff said
This whole CD is SO awesome
She and the band are awesome.
What a great tune live............
Awsome, possum! Who says country can't be great?
Love this!
Goddamn - Bill's on a roll! Another one of my favorites. Great feeling sorry for yourself roadtrip song.
*sigh* she makes me melt. Then Jerry pipes up and the CHILLS, oh the chills... hot 'n cold 'n warm all at once...

She really is a nice person.....total class act...so is the band. Check out the new album A Hundred Miles Or More....great new and old stuff.
It just doesn't get much better than that.
plus- she's a really nice person- met her on the set of David Letterman- very sweet!
This is the kinda stuff ears were made for!
Alison Krauss to Men at Work - this is why I don't play my CDs any more, RP is too good to turn off!
AK & US always get a high mark from me- her band is tops, and this lineup was stellar. Jerry Douglas, who produced it, has some of the tastiest chops in all musicdom.
So wonderful! Amazing live musicians.
