The posts I don't care for are when someone says "this sounds like Motley Crüe with a harp" and someone chimes in to say "this sounds NOTHING like that." Well that's wrong. Everything's filtered through the listener's set of experiences so there's no reason to say they're wrong. I think the "this makes me think of..." comments are okay too. Partly because I always make those connections and you do too: we have a whole thread dedicated to your segues, most of which are just that sort of leap that our brains make to connect things âeven if the musicians themselves didn't intend it or haven't even heard the song we think it sounds like. The derivation just took a circuitous route from one song to the other. When we start to say "ripoff," as in "deliberate attempt to cash in on someone else's style," that's always going to be hard to nail down, but it's even harder to think of major bands that have no soundalikes (soundsimilars?) downstream from them. Those probably aren't deliberate, either, but in the pre-internet years you know there were A&R guys scouring the clubs for bands that sounded like REM or U2 and most of the REM ones got signed. Without U2, the Alarm probably don't get signed, at least that was the feeling back then. The Alarm went on and put out some good records and pissed off Bob Dylan fans* so they at least have some lasting cred. ;-) *I can't find the review of the show but Mike Peters of the Alarm apparently did a short monologue telling the people how much the music of Woody Guthrie meant to him... while Bob Dylan stood literally 40 feet away. No word on what Bob thought but the Chronicle reviewer was incensed. /jackedmyownpost

I find music competitions to be meaningless or comparisons needless to enjoying the music. I agree. All music is derivative. Everything you'd want to listen to, anyway. But it's great for my start-up company RiffsRUs. The plan is to computer-generate riffs and copyright them. We will license the riffs to musicians to use in their works. Then web-crawling and AI algorithms will identify works by other artists who we will sue for royalties to be split between our company and the artist.

Hear! Hear! Three or four measures that sound somewhat like band or performer X could be a coincidence, could be 'nod' or a 'homage' but does not constitute a rip-off. From what I observe out the window, favourite artists who without hesitation explicitly recognize all their influences, often create some of the most original pop music.
