Nice tune. Prinesque in its critique of patriotism, Christianity, and nationalism.
This song is not a critique, it's merely a dismissal. A critique would include some analysis and justification of assertions.
Of course, to those who already think the country, presumably the USA, is "stupid and cruel", justification is unnecessary.
Q: do you think the "love" in "love my country" is true love ('though confounded) or is it just sarcasm?
But during their gig nearly half of the audience left the stage! I think the reason was that the Afghan Whigs played before Wilco. It was a mindblowing rock show!
That the organizers of that festival didn´t change the running order, so that Wilco could play before the Afghan Whigs was a mistake for me. But i remember for me that was no Problem ! I enjoyed both of them!
Although this is still a relatively new offering from RP and it doesn't have enough ratings to represent an accurate picture yet, I suspect that the low average rating we currently see (6.5) is due to a temporary overbalance of ratings from reactionary, jingoistic, "my country is never wrong!" sorts of people -- the type with the magical ability (cognitive dissonance) to ignore any facts that don't align with the things they want to believe, or to spin those facts into being "lies" in their own heads.
Most likely, we all do that to at least a slight extent, at least sometimes; but towards the other end of the spectrum you have people who are beholden to a cult and who perform that "magic" on vast swaths of facts and confirmed evidence. (In the extant case, it may be people seeing the world through Trump-colored glasses.... )
it's a decent, simple song, fits in the album well. enjoyed seeing them this past year. [still prefer Son Volt, Kazoo!]

Bill mentioned in the lead-in to this song the album includes 21 songs. This, in addition to all of the music Jeff writes for his solo projects. Wow.
He wrote a book, How To Write One Song, I received as a Christmas gift last year. I think I need to read it and see what his secret is.
Vapid and simplistic analysis. They seem to show a real lack of understanding of the complexity of American culture or history, especially in comparison to the last 250 or so years of the rest of the world.
