The mirrors in the room go black and blue
On a Sunday morning in her Saturday shoes
We don't choose who we love
We don't choose

The lights over the Midway melt on the street
In a Sunday shoes, with her Saturday feet
She don't love who she choose
She don't need what she use

Daylight comes and exposes
Saturday's bruises and cold roses
Cold roses

Nothing but the sunlight will help you grow
From underneath your bed you can't see the window
We don't choose what we see
We don't choose

Fortunate and angry just like a child
All that money buys you medicine but can't buy you time
We don't choose what we love
And she don't need what she got

Daylight comes and exposes
Saturday's bruises and cold roses
Cold roses
Cold roses

Cold roses
Cold roses
Cold roses

I absolutely love the raw sound of this track. Also check out „Easy Plateau“ of the same album if you appreciated this one.

I agree; since they are following up with Playing with the Band, apparently we are not the only ones who think this.
And then there is a point where the guitarist is also doing a bit of a rendition of Neil Young's guitar work.
Jack White's brother, separated at birth.

Phenomenal song!
Keller Williams does an album of just covers and the cover of this song may be the highlight of a great album.  Worth a listen...

There is no reason to stop enjoying a song over a 15 year old hit-piece originally reported in The Tennessean in 2002.  The song is good.  Enjoy.

Some additional facts regarding the hit-piece (reposted to Billboard that year) that was provided as a link:

1. No one was tossed out of the concert that is featured in the article
2. This was Ryan Adams first extended tour as a solo artist and was mostly acoustic.
3. The fan was repeatedly disruptive during an a capella rendition of a quiet song (with guest musicians on stage)
4. The fan was heckling throughout 7 songs in total during the show (all acoustic).
5. Members of the audience were all too happy to identify the, likely drunken, heckler.
6. He paid the heckler $40 (not $30).
7. The article resulted in many copycat hecklers at later Adams performances.
8. Ryan occasionally plays both Run To You and Summer of '69, by Bryan Adams, in concert.
9. We've probably all sat next to a jacka$$, like the one described, at a concert at some point and hoped for relief.  Apparently, most who attended thought Ryans actions were hilarious and justified.

By all means comment about the person but leave the rating of a song independent of all that.

The album was an homage to the Grateful Dead on the 10th anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death so maybe there is a reason for the similarity.  Of course the Grateful Dead do a better job of sounding like the Grateful Dead.  That, however, does not mean that this work is uninspired.  I think Ryan got this one right and, in the process, expanded the boundaries of his own sound.

Ryan Adams:  11 albums in 12 years.  3 of them double discs like Cold Roses.  Over 150 new songs since 2000.  Do we really need people tearing artists down because they are just too damn prolific?!

Thanks, Fred - I had a television set once - it was one of those with tubes, so it had to warm up. And when it warmed up, sometimes the picture was vertical lines, or horizontal ones, depending on its mood on any given day. I'd have to smack it upside the head, literally, to get the picture to clear.  Percussive Maintenance. I always thought I was torturing inanimate objects out of desperation, but your term makes it sound... clinical and neutral.

Now, I just have to stop attaching human characteristics to inanimate objects.

Awww - thanks, bpkengor.  The cats remain (a little more well-adjusted due to my brother's introduction to "Flying Lessons.") Kidding. He'd no more hurt a cat than he'd break his own arm, uh, intentionally. Finally got a new flat-screen monitor, but I have to lay it face-down at night because the afore-mentioned "well-adjusted cats" treat it like a badminton net without the birdie. And how weird is THAT - they ignore a birdie and bat the net? It's durable, but better to take temptation out of the way. The next thing is that electrified wire mesh across the windows. Kidding.

And I still love this song (yanking the topic back to music, probably far too late for repair.) {#Doh}

Maybe you should treat yourself to a good pair of speakers? ;)

I actually think Ryan Adams is a great singer. Honest, real, and he can pull of a lot of styles: from Mick Jagger like rock to very emotional ballads.

Kings of Leon is not my thing either though.

Nice segue from this song to the Dead's "Playing in the Band." The guitar at the beginning of Cold Roses sounds a lot like the Dead to my inexperienced ears.
Co-oh-oh-oh-old noses... With that voice, yer man sounds like a wolf howling, but rather less tuneful. A voice that hurts these ears, sadly :(

In these days of manufactured pop, he shines like a beacon for his wilful and headstrong insistence on going his own way. He's a relatively young guy who has a huge back catalogue to his name already. My only criticism is that a bit of quality control might not be a bad idea, but I'll take him as he comes rather than not at all

I think a lot of the negativity is based on his personality - I've heard he's very unreliable and, even by rock star standards, unbearably arrogant. And that's the opinion of some very reasonable, decent people, so...
But, good tunes. I'd love to see him perform, but I've heard he's really unpleasant at concerts (usually very late, rude, etc) so until I hear otherwise, I won't be standing at a concert waiting for him to come out of his dressing room.

wow...why are the vocals trying to sound like stephen tyler?..ryan adams is really good just trying to sound like himself!  but it's cool that he's paying homage to jerry garcia and the dead...you can really hear that in this song....

This CD is an homage to Jerry, one of Ryan's influences, written and released 10 years after Jerry's death.  There's a great song on the disc, titled Rosebud, that is about Jerry's most famous guitar.

Sounds like the beginning of a theme - "songs by people shouting into the microphone"

i saw him with phil and friends at red rocks, and besides messing up the song lyrics to numerous songs (all while playing one of jerry's guitars...blasphemy!), he gave off a really agro vibe. having said that, i'm still trying to give him a chance because he seems to have some talent in there somewhere. but then bob dylan comes on, and i remember what a truly talented songwriter sounds like, and i give up on him again. it's quite the dilemma...

Very Grateful Deady. I like it.
yyYyeeeeeeeeeaaah!!!! one of my favorites on the album "we don't choose who we love....we don't choose!!"
I've liked some of this guy's stuff, but this is unbearable. The raspy routine is way forced here on the verse, and then that awful belly-aching on the chorus... oooooff! I'd better go before it gets worse.
That story is turning into myth. Saw him at the beginning and end of the Gold tour in San Francisco and they were two of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. Hope he survives his own genius.

Funny thing is he gets really angry if anyone calls him Bryan.... There was a show early in his career when people were yelling for him to play Summer of 69. He stormed off the stage, never to return.

Jerry & Co. are good to take a lesson from though right? Truthfully RA is a truly great artist/musician...tortured and emotional with ability to communicate it...like Paul Westerberg or Elliot Smith.
