Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree

Waiting your time, dreaming of a better life
Waiting your time, you're more than just a wife
You don't want to do what your mother has done
She has done
This is your life, this new life has begun
It's your day - a woman's day
It's your day - a woman's day

Turning the tide, you are on the incoming wave
Turning the tide, you know you are nobody's slave
[ 1989 version - Find your Brothers and sisters ]
[ 1990 version - Find your sisters and brothers ]
Who can hear all the truth in what you say
They can support you when you're on your way
It's your day - a woman's day
It's your day - a woman's day

Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree
Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree
Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree

[ extra lyrics from 1989 12" remix ]

There's nothing to gain when there's nothing to be lost
There's nothing to gain if you stay behind and count the cost
Make the decision that you can be who you can be
You can be
Tasting the fruit come to the Liberty Tree
It's your day - a woman's day
It's your day - a woman's day

[ end of extra lyrics from 12" remix ]

Changing your ways, changing those surrounding you
Changing your ways, more than any man can do
Open your heart, show him the anger and pain, so you heal
Maybe he's looking for his womanly side, let him feel

You had to be so strong
And you do nothing wrong
Nothing wrong at all
We're gonna to break it down
We have to shake it down
Shake it all around

Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree
Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree
Souma Yergon, Sou Nou Yergon, We are shakin' the tree

Following up on this comment because Cynaera posted about dancing to Shaking the Tree. I learned PG's Shaking the Tree in modern dance class around 1990, so I wondered who Cynaera might be (my modern dance teacher?) and looked them up. Sadly, I found this obit of this bright ray of sunshine who has left this world: https://elkodaily.com/lifestyl...
{#Wave} Hiya, michaelgmitchell - the post was aimed at romeotuma, a much-misaligned, misunderstood wonder of humanity. And no, I don't think he actually lives in a hotel, although if he does, I admire the fact that he has such access to music in Vegas, the land of lost wages and no clocks. He's just a cool dude I've never met.

I used to create dance routines to this song because the rhythm, drums, vocals - the whole tone of the song - motivated me. The song still makes me want to dance, but I'm older, so can't put my foot up behind my neck anymore, and I live in a house where if I whip around too fast, I crack my elbow on a doorjamb or trip over a chair or a cat. Not optimum for creativity. I keep trying - and "Shaking the Tree" helps. Oh - and I once had a weekly article for the local newspaper, and of course, I called it "Shaking the Tree." People seemed to like it... Maybe one day I'll post an already-published article here (the Elko Independent owns the rights to all my published articles, so I might be promising more than I can deliver.) My personal favorite is the one I wrote about my cats. Well, geez - I love cats.

Guh - shutting up now. {#Bounce}

Fantastic tune but the live version is sooo much better.
Sometimes I'd just like to hear him singing the cheerful songs with no deep meaning.
There’s a companion track on Youssou N’Dour’s album ’The Lion’,

Same song with a few slight modification. Youssou’ s version came out in 1989, PG’s version in 1990.

Funny, was thinking the same thing about comments like this.
Nearly always the case, but still have to note the great segue from Death Cab for Cutie's To the Ground to this.
 RedGuitar wrote:

Is that Norse for "freakin' Friday"?

Close enough! It's where we get the English word for Friday. https://bit.ly/37OfyS5

So on a Friday, when I hear them sing "it's your day, woman's day" it makes me think of a certain story where Odin doesn't want to do something on a Friday, claiming "it's a woman's day". But enough of that!
This. Is. A. Good. Song!

This stuff is more accessible and dare I say more pleasant.

I wish I could spend one hour with him and hear in details how he recorded and mixed this song.
One of the very few Gabriel tunes that I'm not tired of hearing.
Read Gabriel's biography, He used  so many tracks laid down from his past projects but kept it fresh.  I'm so impressed with him.
One later album took years to put out as he'd use bits and pieces it took a lot of soothing to get credits done right.  He had built an amazing sound studio near Bath England that had housing, invite all sorts of groups to record and then like a drummer, or guitarist, and lay some tracks. I can't imagine the archive he has managed to build. Then figure out the royalties.
Anyone else hear a "mash-up" with Alanis Morrisette's See Right Through You?

:-)

Unfortunately for John Fogerty, he had to go to court to prove that.

I recently saw Fogerty's 1969 tour which focused heavily on the 3 albums that CCR released in 1969.  I was surprised that half of their cannon was released between January 5th and November 2nd 1969.  2 of the other 3 albums that they release were in 68 and 70.

During the show John talked a lot about the touring, the music, and those times.  As he talked, he only referred to the band as Creedence once.  All of the other times that he mentioned them, he referred to them as "my band".  {#Cheesygrin}
One of those very rare tunes where the live version is 1000 times better than the studio version. Paula Cole is phenomenal on this song from Secret World Live....

Get a grip on reality. Men should become more 'feminine'. At least we'd not be killing wholesale if that were to happen. IMO testosterone reduction pills should be available over the counter in every pharmacy, and should be obligatory for any man prior to using dangerous machinery.

Decent song but I must've heard it 10,000 times over the past decade — on mainstream radio!  With all the airplay he gets on this station I wonder whether Peter Gabriel own shares in Radio Paradise!

Its easy to say that, historically, humans as a species have a vastly improved quality of life than their ancestors of only 2 generations ago. Just look at infant mortality, life expectancy, population growth, etc. But this doesn't counter the fact that, going forward, are species will have to adapt to unsustainable losses in drinking water, arable land, carbon-based energy, and of course climate change. The interesting and unknowable question raised by this song is, how would we fair as a matriarchal species? Some indigenous societies have been matriarchal and survived quite well, which is what I think Mr. Gabriel is referencing in his song.

What's with the raging misogyny? What's so wrong with women bettering their lives? It doesn't have to be at your expense, after all.

We are all dreaming of a better life. Your very sad little diatribe of (highly questionable) "stats" above only goes to show that men  — and of course all of us — could do better, no?

...this song was specifically written in a west african context circa 1990; the social roles of women were far less liberated there than contemporary american mores, ergo the lyrics about breaking down the barriers...

...personally, i think gender is somewhat ancillary to the message of this song, that of liberty and self-actualisation from a repressive status quo, which applies to marginalised humanity the world over...

And I still really love this song. I have the CD in my 10-CD changer in my vehicle, and I just keep replaying this song. Hmmm - maybe that's why I don't seem to be getting anything accomplished when I run errands - I'm just DRIVING. {#Lol}

A classic example of a mondegreen is Jimi Hendrix singing "'scuse me while I kiss this guy", or John Fogerty singing "there's a bathroom on the right".

Great, saw Peter and Youssou in Stockholm (Sweden) a long time ago, it was a good show.
