I couldn't stand this song back in the day but listening to it now, I can appreciate some real musical innovation and courage.

Have to agree.  The enormous demand for content required the MTV music library to play in a turbocharged repeat cycle.  And groups were no longer judged on musical talent, but on their attractive looks, stylish clothes, and ability to create a catchy video.  Many good singer-songwriters and musical groups were cast aside because they wouldn't alter their vision to conform with the Warner/Paramount/Comcast vision.

In our constantly  better-connected world, I see the same thing happening again: our minds' demand for  sensory input leads to us to gobble up everything in front of us and desire even more.  It causes us to consume both accurate information and outright lies.  No surprise that humans and our societies are coming unglued.

Thanks for the smile - yes, they were one of those bands - I was driving around in a little Honda Van delivering dresses (frocks!) with this playing on  a cassette  - I'm not sure if CSN&Y would be happy sharing a cassette with AFOS!

Around 1999, almost 20 years after this came out my wife and I took our young son to a small international festival at the Thunderbird International School of Management in Glendale AZ.  I couldn't believe that the cover band they had playing at the main stage was playing a whole host of Flock of Seagulls songs and I even commented to my wife that while I liked some of their songs, I was surprised they had a cover band dedicated to their music.  They kept playing in the background and maybe 20 or 30 people were watching on blankets as the crowd milled around the various booths.  I think we we're at the face painting station when the band finished up and the lead singer said "we're Flock of Seagulls, thank you all very much for listening". {#Smile}

In early summer of '83 when this was all over the airwaves, it was announced on KBCO that they were going to do a show at RedRocks and there were still seats available, but my friends and I were like, "Nahh... Let's do 3-4-1s at The Walrus instead." We slightly regretted dismissing them, and have always wondered if it was a good show. I'm happy to say that it makes me feel elated and nostalgic to hear it now. They had their time in the limelight, and it still shines.
