fun moment in public this weekend, strolling the aisles of Harbour Freight looking for I-don't-know-what while this song played on the store's speakers, overhead a guy telling his gal "this song is too perfect for our situation " , and my unsolicited response while chuckling was "U 2?"

Turned up the volume for Peter Gabriel, "In Your Eyes" Live in Athens, then left it up for Willin' from Sailing Shoes. Volume is still up and here comes American Girl. Sometimes it just gets loud.

Although this version still gets an 8 from me, (yes, I'm a big U2 fan). I think the live version on Rattle and Hum has more power and emotion to it. That version stops me in my tracks everytime.

Here's a U2 cut that WAS played a LOT back in the day, which seems to have been recognized by BillG since this one doesn't get much play (in fact I hadn't rated it yet) - and maybe it's because this was a great album (even if I'm not a huge U2 fan) this one just sounds like the 8 average it has and I went with an 8 too.  Long Live RP!!

The lyrics to this song are just beautiful.  I used to live in Joshua Tree and the park is definitely inspiring. The thing  that gets me is that I have felt exactly like this song what I am looking for and after all the years since this song first came out, it's still true for me.

Just referencing a track from this Negativeland album. A 'cover' of ISHFWILF, where the vocal is a whiney, northern California dialect speaking the lyric with occasional improves about how hard IT is to find. When they do the song live the vocalist (not a performing member of the band) is presented on a video monitor (old tv) and at the end of the song he looks up towards the top of the screen and finally finds IT. A bottle of 409 sitting on top of the tv. You have to see it to really appreciate the humour, my description is minimal as it has been about 16 years since the show I saw.

U2 were pretty influential when the first hit the scene.  I remember thinking they were pretty damned hip.  I covered Sunday Bloody Sunday New Years Day in a garage band that did alot of progressive and other sorts of non-standard pieces.  I think the very lamest cover we did was an INXS tune (the one with the sax solo, since the lead singer played sax.  Note: Never Tear Us Apart).

As far as U2, I think the haters come in several camps, but in the end I suspect few of those camps are about the music (but this is just a theory).  Bono isn't mainly about music anymore... and he is capitalizing on his success to "branch out" into activism.  Some see this as pure ego.  It very well could be, but I'm not in his skull to see.  He ALSO could be genuinely idealistic and feel it'd be a waste to not use his influence.  I personally don't dig musicians becoming evangelists, but... I understand the impulse.  I'd very likely do the same thing (I have to be honest with myself here).  But at that point, I'm not what people fell in love with right?  Sort of a bait and switch.

But, as far as the music goes... any song that has had so much radio play seems a tad odd for RP, but then, alot of people still love love love the song so... who's to say it sucks?  I can see this being a huge nostalgia song for lots of people who did memorable things while listening to it ;)

IMHO U2 couldn't possibly suck... even if they are a bit big for their britches these days.

This song is clearly not a 1, nor even a 2. It's got some great guitar work, and a pleasant enough melody. It is also clearly not a 9 or a 10: It is dreadfully repetitious, and the vocals drone on and on. I can see enjoying the song if you like Bono and can get into a groove with it. But it'll never be higher than a 5 for me.

When I tried to buy a non-official t-shirt from the tour outside the area (a stadium) the police appeared and sentenced the dealer to follow them, so that I could sneak away with my shirt and my money. used to think this was one of their weaker songs, but after hearing some of their more recent stuff, this one's actually way more authentic and has a truer ring to it. guess everything's relative.

I actually remember being kind of put off the first time or two I heard the new Joshua Tree album. GOD made me listen to it again, I guess, and since then He hasn't stopped talking to me through their music yet!
