I've posted this link elsewhere but thought I'd put it here if anyone is interested. It gives some background about the Mendocino Triple Junction (MTJ) which was the source of yesterday's M 7 earthquake. I have a small role in the description.

Here’s a link to a video on some current thoughts on the Medicine Triple Junction. Thanks Thomas Dunklin!  https://vimeo.com/700083772?share=copy

Yes, all clear. Just talked to a seismology colleague who has a house overlooking the northern part of Humboldt Bay. It is quite shallow and he has been observing the water moving slowly in and out. This is likely not a tsunami but may be a seiche (sloshing back and forth) due to the rolling surface waves. I’m waiting for some photos from him. About 20 sec of strong shaking. Interesting event for sure.

M7 earthquake near RadioParadise HQ. This is a fairly substantial event offshore to the SW of Eureka near the Mendocino fault. Right now there are tsunami warnings for low lying coastal areas in N. Cal and Oregon. The magnitude and type of earthquake would suggest the tsunami height will not be great but, and it is a big but, even a tsunami wave train no higher than a couple of feet can be deadly.

I’m hoping William and crew are doing ok in Old Town.

This is the kind of event that makes my glad I’m retired, otherwise my day would be shot.

Found this stumbling around YT.  Born and raised and don't remember being taught much about Tulare Lake and whatnot.  Heard about it, but little else.  Do remember that the indigenous made canoes and stuff from the Tule reeds.  And then the baddest fog to be found anywhere, the dreaded Tule Fog.

was also confused by the brown ash.. never seen such dirty ash before. looked like an old coal-fired power plant.
.. actually come to think of it, Eyafjallajokull and Etna were frequently pretty grubby. I guess the brown is pulverised country rock/dirt. black juvenile magma and white steam.
But for a while there it really looked like it was burning through an old car tire pit.

another eruption in the series has started .. quite picturesque if anyone is interested.

ps to work out how high those lava fountains are you can guesstimate by timing how long the highest lava bombs need to fall back to earth.. at the moment it is about 5s which would put them at about 120m / 400 feet tall.

Pretty spectacular eruptions. I think the thing that gets lost in this is that Iceland sits astride the Mid-Atlantic Rift. This is new crust being formed before our eyes! Before GPS we could sort of sum up the amount of lava being erupted and estimate how far the two sides of the rift must move apart to account for this. Now, with GPS, we know precisely how much the two plates, North America and Eurasia are moving from one another. Now think about that motion over thousands or millions of years and you can see how much larger the Atlantic will be (after we’re gone).

Headline's a bit dramatic but now I need to go look.
Since it is a National Park they need to put it all back. A little glue ought to fix things up.  In all seriousness though, those are some extremely oversteepened slopes. Sounds like the rockfalls are pretty plentiful there. A M7 on the Teton fault would make for some major adjustments.  Hope you take pictures.
