We did tug of war in high school and I remember the rope had a fixed loop (not a knot but braided) at each end, so your big guy could really lean into it. But a couple of other smart guys decided they would get this advantage too and looped the rope around their waists. This was known to be not allowed but they didn't understand why. They did it on the sly and about zero point one seconds after the whistle they started screaming and running toward the centerline to release the tension. It took a few seconds for the line to go slack though and by then they were extremely sorry and the coaches were shouting at each other and there was no more tug of war ever in our schools.
