This is one of the sites where people actually make and taste the gross, old recipes.  The commentary and pictures of them tasting them are pretty funny.  They tried out a banana/ham/Hollandaise recipe too.

Nice. Interesting that the banana recipe wants you to use firm not-ripe bananas but the plantain one wants 'em ripe.

I thought that was a little strange, myself. I'd think that almost breadlike character of plantains would take a lot of the weirdness out of the recipe, but using ripe ones puts it right back in there. Meh. Not one I'm going to be trying to replicate anytime soon.

All of this is leading me to believe that the recipe below is one of those early attempts at *gasp* ethnic cuisine recipes, 'cause if you think plantain and not banana, it's fairly Cuban-ish. Something got garbled in translation, though. Gack.

Edit: Huh. Well lookit that. Dominican, but still.

They specify in the article where someone cooked it, that you have to use still-greenish bananas. Someone says they're a lot more like mashed potatoes in texture and not very fruity. Mentions that a woody banana like that is 25:1 fiber to sugar, once it's gone brown it's 1:25 or something

But something about the texture of a banana says nope.

Really, it's more of a "I'd eat that but why would you even make it? Ham is good. Cheese is good. Bananas are good. And even if all 3 together tastes good, the payoff can't be that much better than the things alone. It's not like you're cooking them into something new. So serve a platter with some of each.

It's funny that people actually make some of those old, gross recipes; their commentary is usually pretty good.  I've had some savory Indian and Latin dishes made with plantains (usually fried or roasted), but they are quite different from bananas - they're firmer and not nearly as sweet.
Ham & Cheese: Yes indeed.  Bananas with cereal, waffles, or ice cream: Yes.  Bananas with ham and/or cheese: No thank you.

It might be real - or at least this person tried it out, with an explanation that ham and tropical fruits are not that uncommon of a pairing in Caribbean or "Pacific" cuisines.  Still, none for me, thank you.

I remember seeing creamed tuna dishes on menus in some local diners when I was a kid.  I never liked canned tuna, so the thought wasn't very pleasant to me, which probably helped me remember seeing it on those menus once you brought it up.  I know people have been eating dishes like chicken and gravy on waffles for many years, so maybe tuna on waffles isn't/wasn't that uncommon.
