So the little newspaper I have worked for for about a decade longer than I intended to, finally closed. Today was the last day. It wasn't unwelcome but the ignominious kiss-off certainly was. The twice-weekly paper that was part owner of us got sold and we were castoffs, so hey. My direct supervisor found out about it from someone on the street. "Hey it says here on the internet that the Enterprise sold." Boss: "say what now?"
We'd gotten so small, staff-wise, that if any one of us quit, the business would fold, so we found ourselves in a loop of each of us staying on because the timing wasn't good for one of the others, and round and round. So we're all actually okay with external forces ripping the bandaid off. I'll go to a local car dealership that my grandpa worked for, my dad worked for, and now meâdifferent owners but the same dealership. I won't be doing sales though, more of an assistant to the GM or something, we're not sure. So anyway no worries, kind of exciting.
Now we have a little apartment on the back of our garage and the daughter lives out there. Tonight we were on the sofa thinking about turning on the TV when she comes in the house, goes and gets the toilet plunger and heads back out ... I follow, naturally, and there's effluvium coming up in the shower out there. Plunging did little, and a snake down the shower drain caused an exciting uprush of semi-solids.
So that's my Friday! Apologies to Jrzy for not fleshing this out more. I feel like there's got to be another 500 words at least on any of these paragraphs. I'll do better next time!
Geez. I leave for a week and all hell breaks loose. Good luck with those semi-solids, Scott.
This page has some interesting comments, most notably "spitten image" and the notation that "spit" in a biblical sense may refer to some bodily fluid that's not saliva.
Most people don't realize that the expression "change of heart" actually began as "chainsaw art". It's true. It had something to do with SFW cutting a new window in the back of his house to let more light in.
You made me look up "spit and image" as I have always heard and used the more modern derivation. Thanks, Maryte.

Ford is the spit and image of his mother (who I certainly wouldn't recognize if I saw *her* on the street, either) - and congrats on the new gig! I will say, we (and not the royal we) are of an age that it is a genuine relief to know our contributions are still considered valuable in terms of employment.

The GM guy there is 100% my opposite, temperament-wise but we have pretty much identical, um, ADD issues and the same strategies for work and organization. When my boss told him that we were shutting down, he called the guy who owns the dealership and said "Scott's available." Before the boss left, the owner and GM were on a conference call with me. So that's nice. I've worked directly with the owner a few times, did the store's logo etc. and have done their print ads every week for years now. When I first met him he was visiting our town of Powell for just the second time. He'd been doing his homework though and said "I was interested to learn about Powell's connection with Toyota..." and I was able to say W. Edwards Deming without missing a beat so he liked me right away.
This would go in the Journals if we still had Journals...

I saw that they were opening for Queens of the Stone Age for a while. Hard to imagine that in the Manuel suits and the 2 stools on stage. The Ford kid's got a cool voice. I liked the faux old bluesman/Tom Waits act just fine, but this is better. I listened to the EP they released in 2014. He still pulls the other voice out, but it's more for emPHASis or something. Looks like they haven't toured since 2015.
I don't think I'd recognize Ford Jr. on the street but the Byrne kid's unmistakable.

Yeah, that's a bit of a change I liked the original schtick but this less schticky sound is probably a bit more sustainable.

I was digging around Spotify looking for some good Friday music, and I remembered The Dough Rollers. They haven't released anything for a while, but man did their style change a few years after we saw 'em.
Still good, though.
