Dang. Jerry Jeff then Billy Joe. Songwriting taking a hit...:(
Damn. That hurts. And two back to back? Damn.
Billy Joe Shaver lived his songs. He was one tough customer. I'm glad he came back after his son died, what a tragedy and a waste. Damn, that was 20 years ago! c.
I remember David Bromberg’s preamble to playing Mr. Bojangles.
Oh, and Old Crow Medicine Show are hometown kids. Good stuff.
I'd like to hear that...
I get a kick out of OCMS. They're not the same kind of music as Ray's gang, but they have the same dedication to 'old timey' stuff. No surprise he'd be at their show. c.
Well, not so much a preamble, as a 2.5 minutes in amble.

The day he died, Old Crow Medicine Show played here at Nutty Brown Cafe - big outdoor venue. Ray Benson was there - he had heard the news. At some point Ray joined OCMS on stage - did not reveal what he knew, out of respect to JJW's family - and led a full-blast 'Mr. Bojangles'. I think it's on Nutty Brown's twitter feed(?) He is sorely missed. c.
Ps: 'Mr Bojangles' is a true story, right down to the dog. He was white (jails were segregated) and used 'Bojangles' to hide his identity(?) And maybe honor Bill Robinson too.

My introduction to him while in HS in Philly was this song. Even put this in one of my mixtapes. Still have the vinyl and thank you WMMR. One of the best ever terradio stations.
The meaning and message in this song had an immediate and lasting effect on my thinking that for a song, may have had the greatest impact on how I have viewed life going forward from that point in time. More than even anything Dylan ever wrote about. .
