That touchscreen on the Breville concerns me. I'd go with one that's more buttons and dials than pixels...

Actually my coffee guys got rid of theirs. I think mainly because of the maintenance - I think it's a finicky beast and it was hard/expensive to get someone up from Melbourne to fix it. Other machines are nearly as good and more automatic.

If you are ever in Santa Fe, Ikonic Coffee uses Slayers. My partner is a savant on finding good coffee, even found a good cup in Broken Hill.

We have a Delonghi Dedica. It's very similar to the Smeg, but less stylized (I'd just refer to it as underinflated). It is mostly metal and has a much more solid feel. Ours has seen almost daily use for just about 5 years now - I highly recommend it.

Build a greenhouse....heat it well... and grow.   Of course...the heat alone will cost more than any beans you might harvest...but it's a hedge against supply chain issues and market volatility!

The relaxation of drinking a warm cup of joe from inside your new structure at -20... Priceless!

LOL!  For that kind of money, I could afford to fly down to Colombia and buy a coffee finca or two.

And then if I was super astute, I would buy a finca at the right elevation and the right location so the finca could be retrofitted to coca bushes and then sell it to enthusiastic northern hemisphere consumers looking to hedge their consumption.

Get Used to Expensive Coffee. And It’ll Probably Taste Worse Too  — bloomberg.com

Pasted intro:

Coffee snobs have a lot to worry about right now. A global shortage of beans is already threatening to push up prices at cafes and supermarkets. Now, your morning cappuccino or latte might start leaving a bitter taste for other reasons too.

The world is facing a desperate shortfall of arabica coffee, the variety that gives the smoothest flavor and makes up about 60% of world production. Supplies were decimated after extreme weather destroyed crops, and with a La Nina pattern forecast through early 2022 expected to further hurt yields, it could take years for the market to recover. Arabica prices are surging to reflect the mounting crisis, while global shipping congestion is making it even harder to get beans where they are needed.

“This is not just a short-term issue,” said Kona Haque, who leads research at commodity trader ED&F Man in London. “It’s actually something that we’re going to be factoring in for the next couple of years.”

...........

Clearly my hoarding strategy appears to be inadequate.   Any hints on how to grow coffee in the backyard where winter temperatures can dip to -2OC?

P.S.   La Niña years also cause hydroelectric shortages in parts of South America.  Translation:  natural gas will be popular for decades yet to come.

Or you could get used to Robusta. Most (all?) of the high-caffeine coffees out there use some Robusta because it's got more caffeine. Death Wish, etc. It's suffered at the hands of coffee snobbery but it's possible that we'll find it's just a different taste, the way Guatemala and Ethiopia Arabicas taste different, and we just need to adjust.

Sheepish admission:  we bought several kilos of whole medium-roast Colombian beans lately to make sure we had enough for the next few months.
