another idea… head down to your local high end shop… occasionally they are looking to unload last years floor model at a steep discount.  Plus, you really need to listen to your gear before purchasing.

My receiver has that capability  Onkyo TX RZ820. I just listen to it in stereo, no surround.  Tried it on my existing speakers.  Went back to pure direct sound bypass mode and stayed there ever since.

Easy.  Direct drive all the way.  Nothing like a Technics SL 1200 for a good all purpose TT.  Stay away from the Audio Technica look a likes.  Pure junk.

The current incarnation of the original.

Still built like the brick shit house and will last longer than you. Mine is 1989 SL1200 MK3.  Should anything ever happen to it the 1210 GR  MK7 will be its replacement.

There is a lesser one that is still decent.

Thanks.  My first thought about you and speakers is electrostatics.  I read up on them. Just not what I need as I'm trying to stay away from a powered sub and as the article mentions finding a sub for them is really tricky to begin with.

My problem with subs is that they are now all powered and when trying to figure out how to balance them with the rest of a system, you're reduced to guessing about how much volume to give them to match up and then you really never know.  Not a problem with my inline passive sub but they are simply no longer available in any way shape or form.  Hence my desire to return to a 3 way system where the sound is going to be more as intended or more natural.  If I want to adjust the EQ, I'll do it to the source itself before playback, not after.

I don't know if I'm making any sense trying to explain my aversion to powered subs.  My last serous inquiries into subs was back when the first HSU's came out (the ones built in the round concrete casting tubes), and I missed the boat on those.  I looked hard again about 5 years ago and just gave up.

Cool, haven't seen Bertagni SM250's in a long time. A friend had a pair a long time ago when I lived in AZ. I wonder how the styrofoam hold up in those over time and if anyone still fixes them?

If you don't mind not having the bottom octave check out the new Magnepan lrs+. They are in a whole different ballpark than the older models and can't be beat for under $2000. They are around $1600.

I'm aware of this site and have used it in the past.  Just nothing there in speakers that I'm interested in.  Already have Polk and want to move on and the others available there have never tripped my trigger over the years of investigating those brands.  Maybe Yamaha which I have already pretty well investigated, but that would be for monitors in my studio when my present system bites the dust.

I get that. Buying anything from either of those is just not something I'm willing to embark on for something like this, at least right now.  Never used either and to learn the lay of the land would be too time consuming. I have explored FB for selling vinyl but there is just too much involved to make it efficient and doable which is why I'm still using Discogs for that.

The two choices I've mentioned are pretty much the contenders after researching with the ML's still being the first choice.

Yes they do.  I really do appreciate old school traditional 3 ways. I still have my old Cerwin Vega R-123's 3 ways boxed up out in the garage.  They were my first speakers I got back in 1978.  They could be rehabbed, but with the age of the caps in the crossovers it would be a real crap shoot.

Edit: I see your update
They would be my first choice but they are just too far out of my reach.

Been sort of poking around looking at speakers over the past couple of months as my current Polk bookshelf's are about 10 years old and my Radio Shack passive sub is around 30 years old and was refoamed 10 years ago.  We're both 70, not really going to be doing much of anything anymore because of health issues, so we're just gonna lay around the shanty and put a good buzz on until the end.  The wife has really been getting into music again now that I have amassed a great deal of rips so that we have plenty of good stuff to listen to with more being added to the stash daily as I get to it.

It seems that right now there are a lot of closeouts and deals that may never be this good again.

I need some thoughts regarding Martin Logan speakers.  Specifically these: MartinLogan Motion® 60XTi

I just know the name and that it is highly regarded.  They are now discontinued and I can get a pair for 2k. which is nearly half off.

The other contender is the KLH Model Five.  Not discontinued but on sale.  I'm leaning towards the Martin Logan's.  Smaller footprint, Higher elevation of the tweeters and better tweeters (?) bi-amp-able.  Better bass ?

I mostly listen to rock.

The wife and I have discussed this outlay and she is ok with it, if I should pull the trigger.

Dave ?

End of the story: Crutchfield were great about accepting the return, waiving any fees since I had the original box.
Thought about buying a replacement then realized that the DVD hooked up to the TV literally never gets used - and it's easy to move. So left the cables that connect it to the amp/TV - but moved the player to my office and hooked up the coaxial connection and now...
