I've been seeing that too but it's mostly groups like the Red Cross or other agencies that are taking supplies to the people. I sure hope the goverment doesn't just start sending money and saying "use it where you see fit." OY.

Oh, yeah, then Major League Baseball and the Dominican Republic could get together and buy Haiti and turn it into a big baseball park for Spring Training.
I really don't mean to minimize this tragedy but I have absolutely no faith that anything my government does will actually help the people there......

ummmm....sorry to differ: in order to capture your Party's Flag, you run to their more hardened positions...if you win that, you then campaign in the middle. Mr. Obama, for the most part, dished out shop worn Democratic dogma, sprinkled generously with touch phrases like hope and change, then ran decidedly in the middle where he has not been since his election. His drift Left is well noted and I think that is borne by the falling support for his policies. I think a fair assessment of his tumble lies partially or perhaps greatly with his allowing others to 'shape' him by erecting legislation while he tagged along.
I completely disagree

That has happened following every major hurricane that has struck the Caribbean in recent memory. It's pretty cool to see a C5-A parked at our dinky little airport.
Boy, that is a childhood memory, before the C5-A ban; great memories of having the entire house shake and to hear the roaring of that big ol bird as she flew a couple of hundred feet above my house. I used to live a few miles and in the approach path of Charleston AFB; they would fly right over the house almost every day. Yes, it is always cool to see a C5-A.

I've got a pretty good relationship with the Haitian community in South Florida. I've volunteered and helped raise money for many projects here and on the island.
I'm part of a local rogue chapter of a large catholic charity, and for years our group has provided support for several orphanages in central America, south America and the Caribbean.
About 4-5 years ago, one of our retired members decided to go on a vacation and visit our four orphanages.
Armed with a video camera he made the whirlwind tour and returned with a detailed video report.
The first three countries he visited were about what we expected, somewhat clean, organized, semi-rural "third worldish" setting.
He saved the fourth stop, Haiti for last. Simply put, we were blown away. Grown men "choked up."
Even now it is hard to put it into words.
In short, most of the country was a disaster then, the conditions were unbelievable. Sewage flowed through open ditches, children tunneling through garbage heaps like moles, etc.
Filth like you've never seen. Nasty, nasty parasites were rampant.
Hopefully, the silver lining here is that Haiti will get some much needed attention.
The Red Cross is probably the best place to donate for immediate relief.
Regards

...sure sounds like a good idea. Even here in Florida, it takes days and often weeks to get supplies in after a hurricane.
