TUNIC because it seemed like a good start word
PANIC because A and it was the only other NIC word
SONIC because oh of course thatâs it
XENIC because panic is setting in
IONIC yes I burned my 5th guess to see if it was I again
CYNIC if Iâd had another guess I probably would have tried CONIC before I saw it.
Are you talking to yourself about yesterdayâs Wordle?
Yes because I thought it was odd enough that historians would want to know. I mean, XENIC! If it weren't for RP's Xeric, I wouldn't have known either word, but his name sent me to a dictionary.

Someone looked at the code on the page (pre-NYT) and apparently the list is ...just a list, generated by the guy and embedded in the page.
Reportedly there's a list of something like 13k words which are allowed as guesses, but the answers are drawn from a subset of common words (possibly chosen by the author's girlfriend). There are 2315 words in this list.
Yeah, not yet anyhow. I imagine it won't use obscure "crossword-style" or Scrabble® words, but I haven't seen any info on how it generates the word of the day. I assume it's a random, 5-letter-word generator and maybe they alter the word if it makes one that's too obscure.

The one thing that I have seen to this point in Wordle is that it has not used obscure 5 letter words. At least as long as I have been playing.

*edit - They did use "ULTRA" a few days ago, which seems more like a prefix than a word - but it is a word.
