Greyfriars Bobby

In the early 1980's a competition a competition was held by an Edinburgh newspaper to name a railway locomotive in a manner appropriate to the city, and a s a result a Class 47 diesel, 47 711, became "Greyfriars Bobby".
 
 

There was a documentary a while back about the cats of Chernobyl and how they were actually thriving and descendants of some of the cats were still living in the ruins of the houses their ancestors were left behind in. When Chernobyl was evacuated people were not allowed to take their pets. Then foxes and other larger animals started coming in and preying on the cats so many of the cats trekked out of the forbidden zone and some people started taking them in. Cats are pretty resilient it seems.

I have not seen the documentary, or really much of anything else about Chernobyl. I was just pointing out the article itself hedged about how well the wildlife was doing, and cited examples. Whether those examples have anything to do with the radiation is anyone's guess. I'm sure the documentary has a more detailed examination of the situation than a short article.

 I don't expect to see the US getting off foreign oil in my lifetime, but it would be nice if we at least had a plan for the future.
