I couldn't get past the swearing. not that I"m prudish, but I doubt the historical accuracy of some of the terms used.

You cannot judge an artist on the basis of a single piece of work.
With the number of films Spielberg has made there are bound to be a few stinkers. But his good films far outnumber the lesser ones.

I always felt he pulled his punches. Have you seen Saving Private Ryan? Solidly landed punches. Brutal in places, but probably the single best movie about the Allied invasion of Europe, and one of the best war movies of all time. I'd put Schindler's List on my top 10 list too. Munich was pretty solid. War of the Worlds was a fine action/adventure show, Catch Me If You Can was better than average, Amistad was worthwhile. I still want my money back for The Color Purple, but the man directed Jaws for goodness' sake! I'll forgive a lot with a resume like that. Not to be confused with Saving Ryan's Privates or Schindler's Lisp of course....

But I think the book might be a bit old for N as she's only 8, so we'll have to put everything on hold for a couple of years, which is difficult as the full Hollywood hype is being unleashed around its opening. But Micheal Morpurgo is a great author, and lives up in North Devon - apparently the British bits of the film were filmed around where he lives, and where the true stories the book was based on happened, which is nice for us.
Interesting. I think the whole point of the movie is to demonstrate out how embarrassingly stupid war — and everyone in it — is. The Brits are portrayed as air-headed dolts. I wonder if it's that way in the book. I'm mortified to think that someone might take their kid/s to see this. Not that you guys would! but I myself had a vague impression that the movie would be kind of a Black Beauty sort of story of bravery and heart, and I can see someone taking their kids without knowing. We took our 8 yr old daughter to see Dances with Wolves.
