Hollywood aside, could it be labelled as pathological in a sense of being inherent nationally?
Need of enemies........ bomb them............ & the like, I mean.
Needing an adversary, someone to feel better than, is part of the need of the ego to prop itself up.
If you don't feel the push to be better than someone else, what do you care what they wear/do/think/love?
The easily triggered adversarial thing is a sign that people don't feel secure enough in who they are, and besting someone else gives them a little better feeling. This can be a habit created in the sports world when young:
"Our team won!"
or "She's wearing an ugly dress!" "You don't know etiquette." "Your favorite band sucks/If you don't like this, then you're a moron." etc...

in a nutshell he's probably referring to a form of fatal conceit (past, present and future)
if i, in a gesture of good intentions break your leg and then posture as a hero/savior for bringing you crutches and putting you on welfare to survive
what have we accomplished?
intellectually honest analysis like divorcing ambitious political intentions from their actual results is sorely lacking in our society
often the results aren't immediately obvious which makes it all the more difficult
should politicians intervene in a problem when they don't know what they're doing?
