Well, I don't have verification, but I have to assume that everyone in my pod has their disc by now.  Even if they have not, I'm not one for suspense - so I'll post the cover, tracklist and contents.

The muse for this mixtape is my home-state - Kentucky.  All artists on this mix are either born, raised, based or have spent significant time in the state.  Some are well-known, others are not known at all – but together they represent the best of what bellows through these hills and hollers.  Hope you enjoy.  Also, TURN IT UP AND SHAKE YO SILLY ASS!

1.      Cunninlynguists – Intro.  This is a local hip-hop group that’s pretty decent if you like that sort of thing.

2.      The Legendary Shackshakers – Shake Your Hips.  Rarely do covers get better than the original, but I think this one does.  I used to see these guys every few weeks while I was in college.  They played a local dive bar all the time.

3.      Richard Hell – Blank Generation.  Grandaddy of Punk.  Nuff said.

4.      Bill Monroe – White House Blues.  Grandaddy of Bluegrass.  Nuff said.  And, yes – they go very well back-to-back.

5.      The Apparitions – Electricity + Drums.  Local kids with a good pop/rock style.

6.      VHS or Beta – Dynamize.  I usually do not like this band – but this instrumental is just too rad to ignore.  Raddy Radness.

7.      A goofy segue

8.      Exile – Kiss You All Over.  Still sounds fresh.  Why they went away from this style is beyond me.

9.      Sunday Valley – Sometimes Wine.  My favorite local band.  They are sort-of broken up, but once in awhile, they patch things up and play out.  If you like it – like,  a lot, a lot – I’ll send you a copy of their CD.  It’s the only thing in the mix not available on iTunes.

10.   Loretta Lynn – Van Lear Rose.  This song gives me chills every time I hear it.  Must. Love. Loretta.

11.   Joan Osborne – Nobody’s Fault But Mine.  I generally am not a fan of Joan, but I do love Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and this is a very fine version of her best-known and most covered song.

12.   Wilson Pickett – Bring It On Home To Me.  This is somewhat of a stretch, as the original Wicked Mr. Pickett was best known for his time spent in Memphis, but he spent his youth in Louisville and he took his final rest there – right next to his Momma.  So…in 100 years, he will have been in Kentucky longer than most anyone on the list.  This is also the point in the mix where I wish Sam Cooke were from Kentucky.  This song and the next are Sam Cooke covers.

13.   Ben Sollee – A Change Gonna Come.  Ben Sollee is an amazing cello player with a really nice voice.  He also happens to be a really nice guy and is on the verge of some real national attention.  You Tube him and watch him play.  That’s half the treat of a Ben Sollee show.  He’s ridiculously talented and plays the cello like every instrument but a cello.  Try not to fall in love.  Just try.

14.   Another goofy segue

15.   My Morning Jacket – What a Wonderful Man.  Either you dig it the most or you are groaning with discontent.  I am a big fan and I’ve probably seen them a dozen times or more.  You probably already know this song, but it’s a good representation.

16.   The Legendary Shackshakers.  Blood on the Bluegrass.  Another one.  I know – it means I’m lazy.  But this one represents the title of the mix really well and it’s a murder ballad.  I am fascinated by murder ballads and I almost made a whole mix of them, but I thought that might not be the best way to introduce myself.

17.   Dwight Yoakam – Two Doors Down.  This is one of my favorite Dwight songs and it’s an acoustic version, which makes it even better.  You’ll be singing this one in the shower tomorrow.  With a beer.

18.   Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Cursed Sleep.  My favorite Kentucky artist.  Will Oldham is B“P”B and he is also Palace Music and Palace Brothers and I love it all.  It’s not for everyone, but if it hits you, it hits hard.

19.   Rosemary Clooney – What’ll I Do.  Gets me every time.

OK...I got driver8's and Jimi_the_Saint's CDs yesterday.  Talk about a busy Monday!!  Without giving too much away, the music nerd in me MUST have answers to some burning questions (which I understand makes more sense to post answers to AFTER you have posted playlists...no worries...I'll wait. ;) )

BEFORE that, though, I'd like to comment one more time about NWG's mix (because she was nice enough to send me an actual copy in the mail and now that I'm looking at it with my own two peepers, I'd like to say stuff :) ):

Iona -

The Need for Speed is AWESOME!  The cover art is even more spectacular a sight as I hold it in my hands!  Great tunes!  My step-kids and I were boogeying down this weekend.  So much - in fact - that when we built a tent outside in the front yard, they insisted on having it play in the background.  My #1 jam on it du jour is Barracuda.  I am really shaking the moneymaker to Heart today!  When I was little, I could not STAND that song because the local DJ seemed to play it every 5 minutes, but my inner rockstar has a much better appreciation of it now.  Also, did you know I had never heard the theme to Shaft all the way through until your mix?  Thank you soooo much!  I dropped a copy of my September mix in the mail to you today.

Welly and MRosie:  I'm dropping a copy of my mix to yous guys in the mail as well - no need to reciprocate, I just wanted to shout out to my September co-host peeps!

OK...onto the burning questions:

driver8 -

First of all, your theme is brilliant!  Great job on the cover art too! (I'll let you post that when everyone in our pod has received theirs.)  I opened it up and one of my biggest addictions of late stared back at me!  Ha ha!!  I would have never thought to tie it in so perfectly the way you did.  Hilarious - especially for this month!

1.  Bonus for track #5! (Again, not naming names until you post them).  Haunting and morbid as it may be, that is one of my favorite songs ever.  I'm pretty sure BECAUSE it is so haunting and the story behind the singer's first performance of it makes it so memorable.  However, I have never heard the particular version you chose.  Where did you find it?

2.  Track 14 - These guys ruled my world from age 11 to 16.  Such a great band!  Though it's a well-known song, it was a complete surprise to actually listen to it in the context of its own lyrics!  Amazing!  That was so not a question..moving on...

3.  Track 3 blew me away!  I love this woman's voice!!  Who is she and why have I never heard of her before??  Is it that I have been living under a rock for several years or is it because she's local to OK?  I must know about her!!

Jimi_the_Saint -

I think I'm not giving anything away when I say your cover art is old-school spooky!!  Why is that not giving anything away? I'll tell you why - there is WAY more to Jimi's mixtape than its cover.  Clever twist!  Just when you think you know what to expect - BAM!  A twist that makes you smile and feel like you're in on a cool inside joke.  Well done.

1.  I'm not ashamed to say I've only heard of about half the artists you chose.  Thank you so much for the new music.  Track 9 has been in and out of my head all day.  You say the band is local.  I must know more!  How did you hear about them?  How long have they been around?  What album of theirs do you recommend to a new listener?

2.  Track 17 = Awesome.  I never knew I liked this guy!  Especially after he appeared on a Gap ad singing a cover of one of my fave songs.  That's a serious offense in my book.  BUT I finally got around to seeing Slingblade last month and he blew me away.  I think I should give him a fair chance.  Where should I start as far as his music?

3.  MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm Track 18 is lovely!  How is this artist live?  I've heard of the artist (I'm pretty sure it's because they played Portland a while back), but hadn't heard the music until now.

———————————————————————————————-

I'm in heaven right now - thanks to EVERYONE in this club.  I couldn't be more proud of how successful this little thing of ours truly is!  {#Group-hug}
