This is a cold way to look at it but when the actual park itself and not the mammals in it are capable of killing you, it always seems a little more interesting to me. I see people scrabbling around on the big boulders on the floor of the valley and think to myself, "you FOOLS!"

You do know that Yellowstone could blow up at any time don't you?

I'm close enough I go a couple of times a year. My teen boy: "It's always the same!....hey, that's a lot more water than usual..." And when it snowed on our cars early one Mother's Day while we were eating breakfast. "OK...that's beautiful..."

Now he wants to move to "someplace beautiful" and my older one is sending me pics of him hiking with a bunch of friends in Oregon.
I did good.

I liked the fact that when I was last there in the places where I might have gotten myself in trouble the signs did not say "DO NOT SCRAMBLE ON THE ROCKS" but rather "It is very dangerous to scramble on the rocks.  We lose several visitors every season."  I have a reasonable respect myself and have always followed two simple rules.  When in doubt don't and always be thinking at least three times as hard about how you're getting down than how you're getting up.  So far it's managed to keep me from having to call the rangers or worse.

Well I did say I didn't think that was the exact sign I used and it had this exhibit blocking the one I wanted.

If you just go a few feet up the trail though it's there.

That is great! I'm surprised they don't just date everything to Noah's flood though.

And as you drive through with a Geologist at the wheel it doesn't stop with the information on the signs.  Somewhere I have a picture I'll post if I can find it.  I took it at Glacier Point and it's a sign directing you to the building (or more likely its replacement) that Dad made us go to when he first took us there back when I was eight.  It just says "Geology Exhibit" with an arrow pointing down the path.  If you stand at just the right angle though the arrow is pointing right at Half Dome.

The are few things scarier than having a geologist at the wheel driving through scenic areas they aren't familiar with. At times I have been relegated to shotgun so I can scope the road cuts without driving off the road.

When I went to Yosemite, I remember walking about 20 steps, stopping and staring around in awe, walking another 20 steps, staring around in awe, walking another 20 steps,,,

Well I can't find my picture but it was a sign very much like this one and very near by.  I'm pretty sure the one I used didn't have the additional pointer off to Glacier Point and didn't have that other geology exhibit blocking the view of the one I was trying to get a picture of.  When it comes to geology exhibits out there one hardly knows where to begin.  Just zoom out and pan over to the right.

On Rt58 here in VA there is a "historic" marker that tells you there is another "historic" marker 500ft further down the road. Guess they don't want you to miss that one.
I'll try and get a pic of it next time I go to Petersburg.

As they have been digging up and carting off the hill I live on to put their silly little interstate through I've been thinking how much I wish I still had my geologist father around who could explain all the different strata they're going through to me.   I'm not sure I would be willing to invest the hours asking him would involve but I sure wish he was still here.
