A sheriffâs deputy in Georgia has been fired after being filmed beating a Black man, Roderick Walker, during a traffic stop near Atlanta in front of his two children. He was a passenger in a ride-share. Two deputies can be seen on top of Walker, with one punching him repeatedly.
Imagine if there was a mental health organization you could call in to respond to situations like this and free the police officers from having to deal with it except possibly to backup the health responders. You could pay for it by taking some money out of the police budget. You know, partially defunding them.

But we require they be spent on training, these other personnel, and a short term position of selling off all the surplus military gear they have gathered in the last decade - no selling them to the local militia though..... ah wait, maybe we need to start a foundry.
I think part of the solution is to put the response under the control of health care separate from the police, with police supporting them. The cop training for fighting crime isn't a good fit to dealing with mental health issues. But I would be good with having it within the police department if the health cops were really in charge, trained properly, and their performance evaluated on ability to deal with situations using minimal violence.
