IF you are willing to do the repair yourself. Some states have laws about what kind of used parts repair shops can or can't use - in NY the repair shops are licensed and cannot use brake parts from junkyards. But if you do it yourself, hay no problema. ** *** *** ** If it were me, I'd ditch the car if you can get $2500 on trade, and with the $3000 you were going to spend on repairs, thats $5500 down. Put it towards a new car. With the age and mileage, you're not in a good spot with that car and you could be facing more repairs very soon. If you go for something like a Nissan Versa 1.8 S w/Auto you could get it for approx $169.16/mo for 60 months with the above figures in play.

FWIW - I would repair the breaks and replace timing belt. That being said, the timing belt for $600 is outrageous! Catlytic - forget it. Water pump - wait till its leaking on the ground - they all leak when they get old. Tune up - money maker by the dealer. Dealers are paid by repair work. They will always try to up-sell you.

($450) $3000+?!?!? Is it worth it?? (Kelly blue book is around $3K for trade in, $5K for private sale.) You can get a nice jeep cherokee like mine for about the cost of repairs. Yeah, & this is a gret time to finance - auto companies are DESPERATE for your new car business. You might even get X2 trade-in value - make that sales(wo)man SWEAT!

For everyone's reference there's a website that has instructions with photos for removing car stereos and speakers on many vehicles: www.carstereoremoval.com
I bought a set for my wife's car yesterday, and they seem to be clear and comprehensive.
They charge $4.99, but I figure that's cheap compared to breaking something!

Well, as far as tire wear is affected. They do affect ride comfort and safety though. I guess I was throwing out different things for a car with that many miles. Rotten vac. hoses and the air cleaner will rob you. So will neglected oil and filter, although it sounds like you're on top of that.

It kinda depends on the options on the car. If you have crank windows, you need a special tool to take off the window crank (available at any auto repair place). It's cheap little metal thing that looks like an open ended wrench). Assuming you have power windows, though, you can pretty well just pull the panel off on most cars. They are just held in with plastic anchors (be ready to buy new anchors anyway - they never fit right again once they've been removed and they should be cheap). You will hear a ripping plastic sound that sounds much like you are trying to undo a zip tie. That is OK. Those anchors are all around the door panel (probably 20 of them). When you replace them, it's as easy as pushing the head of the anchor into a hole and lining them up with the holes in the door frame. The speaker is just held in with a few screws and can be easily replaced with a screwdriver. You can do it all yourself. It would be hard to screw up too bad.
BTW, this is exactly what I did. Powerwindows, no special tool needed. Had to unscrew the thing around the power window button, and unplug the electronics (easy). Then, gentle prying with a spatula was good. There were about 8 anchors. Littledraws was really helpful remembering how it all went back together, and helped line everything up to snap it back on. One anchor broke, but it was fine not to replace it. We did crack the housing on the door handle, but I removed it, superglued it with some skill... and now it looks pretty good. and ooooh, it is so nice to have a non-ruined speaker in there! Thx for your help.

That car likely is front wheel drive I'm thinking, and only has bearings in the rear. If you've had brakes replaced likely they were repacked. Get the CV joints and dust boots inspected in the front, as well as struts and rear shocks. Note any fluid leaks. Buy a quality injector cleaner additive and change the air filter every 3 to 4 months, even if it looks clean. Make sure that there aren't any rotten vaccuum hoses. Keep oil and filter changed regularly. I don't think 26 or 27 mpg with a light foot would be too much to ask.

20K miles/year? Damn, I thought you worked from homeI
If wheel bearings were costing you 2mpg they would be toast, and you'd hear them. O2 sensors usually either work or they don't, they don't degrade and affect mileage without the fuel injection computer issuing an error message. Injectors ditto—closed loop system. By the time they are bad enough to affect gas mileage the car will run terribly. More likely culprits:
When was your last tuneup? On a car this age you might be due for spark plugs.
Tire pressure. This can sneak up on you.
Wheel alignment. If it's costing this much it's costing you tires too.
Do you have a temperature gauge? Is it reading cold all the time? A thermostat can stick open as well as shut, the engine will run cold, and you'll see a drop in mileage.
Have you added any accessories, like a roof rack or cargo box? They cost more than you'd think.
Are you running the A/C more than usual?
Are teenagers driving the car between fillups? Teenagers are hell on gas mileage.
Has the composition of your fuel changed lately? Gasohol will give worse gas mileage.
There are a few more things that might be sources of trouble, if I think of any I'll post.
I do work from home... but the other car is a lease so we're always using mine for trips, to keep mileage low on his. I did have a tuneup last year I think, and wheel alignment. But, Lucky is the man with a reliable mechanic (not me, I'm afraid) This is an interesting question about fuel quality being extra poor... I found rumors online about it... but it sounds like an urban myth. I'll watch out for the tire pressure sneaking up on me.
