I called DirecTV to cancel our account and was greatly annoyed by the CSRs attempts to talk me out of it. She keep asking why and I finally asked her what would constitute a valid reason and I'd say that. What part of close my account do you not understand, hon?
Since I moved into the big house a year ago I cancelled my DTV account at the little house and was using/paying for Mom's DTV at the big house, costing me over $110/month. Last week I called and cancelled the account, told them Mom was in a nursing home. As you mentioned they tried everything to keep me from cancelling - wasn't someone else going to be in the house they could transfer the account to, could they transfer the account to the nursing home, etc. They finally agreed to cancel but told me there was an $80.00 cancellation fee as she was under contract till the end of 2013. After one of my better acting performances they waived the fee.
So starting today I have no type of cable/satellite/broadcast TV. Just Roku.and all its channels. DTV has been sending me notices for a year to renew the account I cancelled at the little house with essentially the offer of the same service Mom had for only $40.00/month for 18 months. I admit I am a TV junky but am going to see how long I can go before caving and taking them up on the cheap renewal offer. I can watch new Longmire shows on the computer but will miss the rest of this season's episodes of Major Crimes, as in order to watch on the computer TNT insists you have a TV provider, WTF.

You've got a buddy stealing cable for you from next door neighbors.

say you died although one particularly useless phone service wouldn't even believe that for my dad.

Perhaps you should have said that you've started ... er, joined a new religion and it's against your beliefs.
They did that with me when I closed out my account about 1.5 years ago. They even offered me 6 months free to stay on but I didn't even have a TV anymore. Even that didn't seem to be a valid reason. At first they told me they would send me a box to return the receiver in or I'd get charged full price for it but instead they sent me a Netflix sized envelope to return the receivers card in which I did. And now more than a year later they still send me offers in the mail twice a week.

Anyone have any issues with Hulu Plus' stream cutting out/locking up?
Yes, lately it has locked up BUT it only does it after a commercial when the show is supposed to start back up. Then if you restart the show because its locked up and move the timeline to the same spot you have to watch the damn commercial again before the show starts. Pisses me off
A customer service rep (from the cancellation department) told me that they now have Internet-only packages, and you don't have to bundle with cable to get cheaper rates. She secured me a damn good deal that I can transfer to my new place - so I don't have to give up Innernetz anymore. And it lasts a year instead of 6 months and she told me when the year is up call and see what promos they can offer.
So I will be cable-free. I'll miss the 3 shows I watch (2 on PBS, and Grimm on NBC) but I can always watch 'em online once they've aired.

And I was so pleased to be informed of this, I ran 47 red lights in His honor.....

Never had cable only over the air from our antenna. Best thing I ever bought was the Roku and all the channels they offer like Hulu Plus & Netflix when I need them.
Besides we got some good channels here in N.E. right.
I don't know bout that. I don't tune into broadcast tv. I've used my wii to watch netflix, but that's about it. I am exploring the new Roku as a replacement for the Wii.

I haven't had cable or dish since 2007.
One of the weird things about watching it now is how utterly intrusive the commercials are. For me, it's intolerable

I haven't had cable or satellite in almost 2 years now. Ever since my projector TV died and I decided I wasn't going to spend the money to get it fixed when they wouldn't sell me the $30 custom transformer and wanted me to send in the entire EHT board and then pay $300 plus shipping both ways. Been keeping an eye on FleaBay but all the others that come up for sale have the same problem. I don't even own another TV. Just watch, HULU and NutFlex on the Mac occasionally.
We just bought ourselves a new 46" TV with WIFI, so we're gonna drop DirectTV when our contract is up in May. We've subscribed to Hulu Plus & Netflix and are quite happy with them for $16 per month instead of 500 channels we never watch for $88 per month from DirectTV.
